I spent weeks searching out the original locations from the beginning of the film Le Mans for the making of the film, looking for the chateau where Steve stayed, Booking accommodation and generally being dogsbody for the team. Should have my copy next week and looking forward to it.

He stayed near Laval which is way west of Le Mans, but the opening sequences of the bridge and driving the Porsche past the bar are south of Arnage at Fillé. It took me two minutes to recognise the bridge and the flour mill but another month to work out that the bar was in the same village! It was only the stone steps opposite - just visible for a second or two - that made me realise it was the church at Fillé. I went there in the XKSS which they loved to see. Him driving towards Le Mans between the plane trees can still be copied if you want a commemorative photo since it is just south of Mulsanne towards Tours. Maison Blanche has long gone sadly; the road from the Porsche Curves to the circuit was the circuit in the day and all has changed. I never did find the bend with the bridge, despite talking to locals and even the gendarmes, but you'll see a right hand bend and bridge in the new film with a twee chateau now and that is near where I live. Best I could do for that scene. Some fun times that, plus being well paid for my trouble!

ETA My favourite moment showing just how naïve these film crews can be was when they phoned me one month before the 24 Hours asking me to find two rooms in a four-star hotel! There is but one 4 star hotel in Le Mans, and I managed through connections to get the two rooms - but at a price of course. Phew!

Yes, I believe the release is imminent. I should be getting my copy in the next week or so. I'll see if I can find out more for you.

I would like this on DVD, hate the thought of having to go into London on a Friday just to watch this!

Just checked out Trip Advisor reviews of the cinema in Haymarket, bottom line is don't go there!

The reply is that the launch is the 14th and the date for the release of the DVD isn't yet finalised. I would expect in time for Xmas though. I hope to have a copy of the script shortly.

WOW, what a film! If you like cars, motor racing, Le Mans, Steve McQueen and cinema this is the film for you.

The two directors of Steve McQueen – The Man and Le Mans gave an intro to the film and then gave a Q & A session afterwards. Many of the production and research team were there too.

The film was five years in the making and had newly discovered film footage, sound clips and documents that have never been in the public domain. When Steve was dying of cancer aged 50 in 1980 in a hospital in Mexico he gave a last interview that was published in a magazine at the time. The film makers tracked down the audio tape of that interview and part of it opens and closes the film. Incredible!

David Piper who lost a leg below the knee in an accident while filming was in the audience and still drives his own 917 at 84!!

The DVD will be a must buy when it comes out

It was a very special night last night.

The 917 outside was the icing on the cake!

Though it might be interesting to see the Le Mans museum tribute to the man taken in the museum in 2012, spot the mistake.

At the Lm Classic a few years ago I was speaking to a chap from the Porsche museum about a Gulf 917 they had on show as part of a display of cars used in the film & props etc. When I asked why the car was not wearing the number 20, they said that the rights to the number when used in conjunction with a gulf 917 were owned by the McQueen estate/family & Porsche were not permitted (or had not paid enough) to use it.

I took it with a pinch of salt at the time, but I've never seen a Gulf 917 wearing number 20 other than in the film.
