Le Mans 2016 Eurotunnel Convoy
Discussion
‘Tanks’ for the feedback chaps , I’ll take a look at Tyretotravel – I’ve not come across that site before.
To clarify, Calais to Le Mans will be 260 miles total; broken down as follows:
- Calais to the meeting point is 60 miles of Autoroute.
- The meeting point to Le Mans will be 40 miles on the Autoroute, followed by 160 miles of rural D Roads.

Just out of interest what Eurortunnel crossing time would you need to get if departure time is 10:00am (local time)?
How long do you estimate the route from the meeting point will take?
In order to make it to the meet point for the 10:00am departure, the last crossing I'd suggest would be the 7:36am (UK time) which arrives in Calais at 9:11am (local time). How long do you estimate the route from the meeting point will take?
Total driving time thereafter will be around 3.5 hours. I've allowed a generous 2.5 hours for breaks and a lunch stop, which in reality, will probably be less.

This sounds much like the route I normally do, due to it from Rouen not being policed at all down the old N138 to Le Mans.
I would be very much up for doing this as I saw three cars from Rouen to Le Mans!
No, we won’t be using the old N138/D438.I would be very much up for doing this as I saw three cars from Rouen to Le Mans!
We tried it years ago and found it clogged up with slow moving local traffic. Overtaking was always risky unless you had an alert passenger and trying to keep a group of cars together proved difficult. Perhaps we were unlucky on this occasion or maybe you travel down the weekend before?
The route I’ve planned for next year will be mostly traffic-free.

This was for the Classic, as we used to alternate years, but we always do 'different' routes - often taking days...
This trip was via Spain!

I don’t think we’ll be there early enough for the rendezvous point, but would be really interested in blagging all your hard work on route planning.
We’ve often done the N138 type route and although it has some good bits, I suspect there are some better options further off-piste.
I appreciate you wouldn’t want to advertise the final route for obvious reasons, but maybe nearer the time we could swear a vow of secrecy and do the funny hand shake at a Sunday Service.
Also one of our lot (driving a 4.6s 0-60 car) is possibly the slowest driver known to man, so would hold up even a cyclist, let alone a convoy!

I always go on the 0720am thursday morning crossing and most use the auto route from Rouen now hence very little traffic on the N138. Would be interested in a route map of proposed route for next year!We tried it years ago and found it clogged up with slow moving local traffic. Ha! You're right - I'm keeping next year's route close to my chest!I'll have the route we used for the last race somewhere though, so if I can lay my hands on them, I'll PM them to you. Much of it was pretty narrow with lots of blind corners, so if you've got anything wider than normal, it might not be suitable.

HI, I'd be interested in joining, but have booked slightly later tunnel, but might be able to make the 7.36am one?
Trains are pretty busy Thursday morning, so I think it unlikely Eurotunnel will be able to accommodate you on an earlier train...Didn't fancy the 3-4am drive from Sheffield, so booked a hotel in Folkestone.
I'm on a 6.25 crossing on Thursday so should be able to get there in good time after a stop at a hyper market to stock up on supplies. Driving down in a Golf R with a friend and as its our first Le Mans, it would be fantastic to start the experience off on the right foot. I'll check with my partner in crime but sounds like a fantastic way to enjoy the drive rather than a long, boring drive!

Our last stop before arriving at the campsite will be Carrefour in Le Mans, so if you didn't fancy driving all the way down with the extra weight or listening to the clinking of bottles, just follow us and stock up then. We've another Golf R in the group too.Ash1751 said:
Also on an early morning ferry so should be able to make it. First time going to Le Mans and going by myself so might as well join up!
It'll be a great start to your first (of many) trips.Gassing Station | Le Mans | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
