Monument des Allies - Arnage
Discussion
Just sharing something from another thread, as it's semi-relevant to the Le Mans forum.
This is something which I first heard about on here or on a Club Arnage thread, about relatively unusual or unknown things which were near the circuit - one thing that was mentioned was a monument to an aircrew who crashed in 1944 near the circuit.
I did some research and thought I knew where it was, and while driving back from Arnage corner during this year's race I saw the sign on the road directing you to it - sadly you can't access it when the race is on. But we happened to be in the area on holiday later in the summer, so I went looking for it, and this is what I found:

It's also only about 2 miles from where the Wright brothers first powered flight in Europe took place, which is just up the road on the site of the horse racing track and to which there is a separate monument.

The airfield and railway marshalling yard next to the track were heavily targeted by Allied bombers, whenever the ACO do major groundworks they have to go carefully, when the the tunnel under the track from the main entrance was re-done a few years back they had to stop a couple of time for unexploded bombs. Careful with those extra long tent pegs.

I am still looking for the memorial for the last driver to be killed prior to Simonsen (Eljoras) somewhere between Arnage and Porsche
Details of it here, but i've never seen ithttp://www.motorsportmemorial.org/focus.php?db=ct&...
That is just before the start of the porsche curves on the infield of the track (the right hand side behind the Armco. There are some telegraph poles nearby. we got to it once by going into Beausejour campsite then folling the main track on the site to where it bears right past the farm buildings, keep going straight on and there is a little track which leads up to the side of the track. there is the campsite fence involved and a padlocked gate. but its easy to stop there prior to the race.
