We are trying a new route this year as we normally do Portsmouth/Caen or Poole/Cherbourg. We arrive in St Malo friday morning at around 8am and we are looking to avoid motorways so I've come up with, as it looks the obvious way, St Malo and cutting south east down towards Fourgeres along N12 to Ernee, Mayenne and on down into Le Mans.

Anyone tried this route or is there a better more fun/scenic route for a group of TVR's and a couple of Nobles.

Have look at this thread.

I chopped it up a little to use it to get up to St Malo after the Classic.

Sorry about the picture. Just took it as a reminder for my Sat Nav. But the route looks good and well recommended for the first part by Lowdrag.

Hope it helps.

That's the route I normally take with my chums. Some nice roads and a couple of small towns suitable for a coffee / pits stop (we usually stop at the small town square in Mayenne). The first section getting out of St Malo can be a little sticky (I suppose it is the 'rush hour') but after that there's some good sections for a bit of a run. Done it in Chimaera and MGB and fun in both in different ways. Enjoy a blat or a look at the scenery.

Hi Griffgray.
That sounds like a useful convoy and great fun. We have been doing the St Malo Le Mans run for a fair few years and do it this way.
Get out of St M on the Rennes road heading south, then turn left eastbound on the N176. Just past Dol de B turn right on the D155 to Fougeres. Take it easy on the N road as you will be over excited and there may be Gendarmes about! Once on the D roads you should be ok to to wind it up a bit.

At Fougeres you can either go down the N12, or choose a parallel D road, but arrive at Mayenne and then take the D35 to Sille le Guillaume. Then get on the D5 to Beaumont sur Sarthe. The square in Beaumont sits astride the main souther d road for the boys coming down from some of the bigger channel ports. We call it Beaumont Poser Square. Great place to have a cold drink and wave at the sports cars heading south.

We are on the same route a couple of hours behind you in a few 911s and Caymans.
Have a good run.
Cheers
Rick

We chose St Malo route mainly because ferry times seemed a lot more civilised but also good to have a change and really appreciate your input and sounds like we might have some fun. Will have a closer look at your route later on the map.

Thanks again

Two years ago we did exactly the same thing from St Malo (for the modern 24 hour), taking the smaller 'd' roads to Fougeres. Although it was scenic, I was somewhat disappointed by the amount of speed bumps and roundabouts that the French have fallen in love with. To be honest it did take the gloss off the drive. That said, we did discover this little gem for accommodation just on the outskirts of Fougeres.
