I correctly anticipated Brexit and managed to get an exchange rate of 1.27 for my much valued pound notes. I just checked and the rate is down to 1.16. Now as I only average silly MPG in a 5.9 litre car with a drinking problem, my thoughts have turned to fuelling the beast.

Can any of the locals advise us all how much a litre of your unleaded (Sans Plomb) is at the moment and I'm sure a few would like to know the price of diesel?

I normally go on the ferry empty and fill in France. I'm thinking that I might want to reverse that trend this year. But it might not be as clear cut for the guys on diesel.

Can anyone help? Lowdrag?

A V8 and a small petrol tank means I'll be spending plenty of time finding out prices!

That looks like:

£1.12 - £1.26 a litre for 95 RON Petrol.

£1.13 - £1.36 for 98 RON

£0.96 - £1.13 for diesel.

Looks like I will be buying a full tank before I get on the ferry. Our diesel driver might just make it there and back on a full tank from Portsmouth.

Whatever fuel, it's best to buy at Supermarket Pumps in France.

There is a government web site here:-

http://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/

However, I have to ask the old question "is it worth it"? I appreciate the thirst of the beast (mine does 15 mpg)but at 5 centimes difference per litre that makes the grand total of 5 euros for 100 litres. Or around £5 per 300 miles. So coming from Calais and back not even the price of two pints here during race weeks. Just grin and enjoy. You don't run a six litre car for economy.

The fuel stations on the auto routes, like UK Motorway service stations are more expensive. I always look for a local supermarket for refuelling, as it is typically 10% to 15% cheaper. My Motorhome to Le Mans this year took about £150 of fuel for the round trip. I only fill up on the Autoroute if I really have to.

As I'm in a diesel this year it looks clear to me that buying it in France will be cheaper as long as I don't fill up at Autoroute services, and as the route down will involve very few Autoroutes that won't be an issue. Might use them on the way back but a full tank before leaving should get me back to the UK and most of the journeys I have before returning to France two days later.

But as Lowdrag says, it isn't a major issue in the overall cost of the trip.

That looks like £1.06 a litre to me. Sounds great to me.
