Thanks lowdrag. I just looked on the Brittany Ferries website and the Portsmouth-Ouistreham route isn't showing... anyone know if its high season only?

Ouistreham is the port near Caen. On their website they list it is 'Portsmouth to Caen'.

We use this overnight crossing on the way home on the Mondyay, make it a much more relaxed Le Mans and saves on the cost of a hotel.

We usually go Dover Calais but I live local to Portsmouth so this year we have 21 booked in on the Portsmouth to Cherbourg 9am ferry. We get a group booking discount of 10% and the 21 car and passengers goes free.

This brings it down to £250 but the return 5pm ferry on the Monday is already nearly full.

It cuts the entire mileage down from about 1100 miles in the car to less than half that so what you pay extra in ferries, you save in fuel and tolls and it works out pretty much exactly the same cost but without that painful run to Calais via Rouen on the Monday with the worst of hangovers.

Give it some thought.
