Just phoned AA to get Euro cover for Spain and it costs £67, which is fair enough and somewhere near what i paid a couple of years ago.... then they go and stick an extra 67% premium on top because the car is over 11 years old!!!!

Makes a total of £106.50. And no, they won't haggle.

Anyone know any other GOOD European breakdown services.

Thanks in advance.

Seem to remember either Corin D or DustyC mentioning Brittania rescue. Worth a try!

RAC has been mentioned as if you are a member of one of the affiliated clubs (FOC) then they waive any surcharges... just that I wasn't impressed with RAC when I used to be a member

Thanks for the info so far.

Try EuropAssistance - they used to be great value for money, and have a far better network in Europe than the AA. If you are a member of a car club, chances are that they have (or should have) some form of discount with a European Breakdown provider

I broke down at Le Mans this year (having broken down in Antwerp in April) and both times the RAC Europe Assistance were brilliant and all for about £85 for the year.

Cannot praise the service highly enough.

Certainly sounds better than £107 for 17 days! Mind you, that was with the surcharge, your car is a lot younger than mine.

If the car is over 14 years old, you have pretty much had it - they really do not like this. But again, if your car is a classic (as opposed to just old / clapped out), then try the car clubs - they usually get a good deal

11 year old Ferrari Mike. I tried this argument with them but they, reasonably I suppose, said that they couldn't just take people's word that an 11 year old car was serviced to the hilt and in A1 condition

I used RAC this year for Le Mans. About £35 for 6 days on a 1992 TVR S series (13 years old then :-)).
Definitely got a reduction by saying I was a member of the car club....something about waiving the 'old car surcharge'.!

I used Britannia rescue for a short trip to France - think it was about £21 for a three day visit.

Thanks guys.

Now covered with RAC - £67 for 17 days, older car surcharge waived as I am in FOC!

Aha, it worked! We should see if Pistonheads can come up with a discount for the cover? I may be wrong, but given all the advice, technical expertise, etc given on these forums, it would be reasonable to expect that the cars PHers drive are in reasonable nick.

Old news now that Al has got sorted. But what about checking the level of cover that you get with your car insurance policy? BG is insured with Lancaster, I had a big problem last year in the Alsace and my standard level of cover that was included in my policy gave me a hire car for a fortnight, all costs incurred, and covered moving BG twice by truck until he ended up in Luxembourg to be fixed. Even paid my train fare, taxi and cost of refreshments when I finally picked the car up after dropping off the hire car. And the most professional bunch of call centre staff with good english too. Not bad for £375 a year fully comp. The silliest thing is, I didnt even know I had got this cover either, they told me when I rang them to check on my ins cover whilst abroad.
