Can someone recommend a good pocket radio please - good as in long battery life from a set or two of double AAs or a single recharge and that has decent reception and can go loud enough to hear over the race.
There's not many named brands still making small FM radios (other than the likes of the Roberts linked already) so just get a cheapo chinese one from Amazon. The one I've got seems just as good as the earlier Sony and Roberts ones I've had - especially when there's 50-odd loud motorcars bombing past every few seconds.

I also like using some in-ear headphones/earphones with a rubber tip to make a nice seal. Blocks the external sounds nicely, and you can leave one out and make conversation but listen on low volume until the commentator starts shouting because something has happened.

I was thinking more something like this as it's a bit easier to carry around and more comfortable for a long number of hours but I guess you lose the noise cancelling effect of the big cans

I took one of those. I found I could plug a pair of wired earbuds inside my ear defenders. The radio is a little plasticy, but it's fairly resilient. The manual tuner was a bonus too, as I found I could precision seek the Radio Le Mans frequency with minute scrolling of the wheel. I get the feeling with it being a temporary broadcast, a digital tuner might struggle to stay on it.

My cheapo digital radio hasn't needed retuning since I bought it (as it only gets used one week a year). It even seems to remember the frequency from year to year.

This is the one I have, 7 of your finest GBP => https://www.amazon.co.uk/COVVY-Portable-Earphone-D...

I used something similar for years but as soon as I bought the defender style earphones radio I didn't look back. Infinitely superior. Personally, I can't stand the in-ear 'bud' things, but that may just be me.

I got fed up with my earphones getting tangled up with my ticket lanyard and my camera strap. I bought a set of Peltor ear defender radios and they are a revelation. No more tangled mess and they are comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The ear defenders are good for hearing protection (although that horse may have bolted for me!!)

I’d strongly recommend looking at these. Don’t get the cheaper ones either, my dad did and he ended up buying the Peltor ones anyway!

Perhaps its old age, but I agree. I've had the Peltors for years, and have a Roberts radio as back up, with some old earphones that fit - most don't, especially the cordless type. I suppose I could use the phone instead. Then I have the twin cassette ghetto blaster for the campsite. They don't make 'em that that any more

I'd very much like to do a new page highlighting BSJ and the way in from there plus what was on BSJ last year ie screens catering, WCs, Showers etc -

Please can you email me - info@le-mans-guide.co.uk

so we can have a private chat as I haven't been down BSJ way for several years and I would be grateful for your help.

Big fan of the peltor also. Expensive to start with, but they have done multiple years and expect them to carry on for a few more. (Though to be fair, they only get used once a year).

We got cheaper ones for someone not expected to make return visits to the race and they were junk.

Got a pair of the active hearing ones on eBay years ago. Bit more expensive, but it means you can allow more ambient noise in and have conversations or enjoy the atmosphere but also shut it all off when a bit of quiet is needed.

No cables makes a big difference. Usually have a rucksack and they don’t take up too much space or clip them onto the webbing.

Sounds interesting. Do you have a link by any chance?

Although 2024 won’t be my first trip to Le Mans, it will be my first time driving there, first time driving on Le Continental e’space and to top it off I’m doing it all solo. So needless to say, this post has come in handy.

This is the model. Not as expensive as I thought, considering they will get years and years of reliable use.

They look good, I'll have to get a pair for my self. Last year I just used the radio on my phone and some bluetooth headphones. Not having to worry about charging the phone will help a lot.

Excellent, thanks Strasse. Last year was my first and found it extremely useful.

Could I make a small suggestion? Would love to have more of the expert opinions or attendees experience around the grandstands. There’s very little up to date information out there. Thanks!
