Regarding the little GB stickers - Halfords don't seem to sell them any more, so I bought a couple on eBay. When they arrived, the GB was white on both of them. All the cars I have seen have a yellow one on the rear plate and a white one on the front plate. I have asked the AA to clarify whether this is the "law"! Watch this space!

"I know that when driving in the EU you don't have to display a GB sticker providing you have the Euro number plates. Question is - do you have to have those plates front and back?"

The short answer is No. Just the rear is the legal requirement.

I'm driving to Spain in the spring, and so I checked the https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/flags-... website - it did not specify, I emailed the DVLA - they referred me to RAC and AA, who did not specify. So I contacted my MP who passed on my request to the head of DVLA.

3 Weeks later I got a reply from DVLA Head of Policy saying:

"In 2001, regulations were introduced which provided for the voluntary display of the GB / EU symbol on number plates. Displaying this symbol on the rear number plate of the vehicle allows the motorist to travel in the EU without having to display the traditional oval GB sticker".
They then promised to review and update the GOV.UK website (Feb 15).

However, as others have mentioned on this and other forums, in might be more sensible to get a pair of GB/EU plates made up front and back rather than trusting that your local Gendarme in France or Guardia Civil in Spain is fully up to date with the UN Convention on Road Traffic 1949 and all its subsequent updates.

I got mine at the EBay shop Plateservices who will make you a pair of plates with GB/EU for £12.60 including free postage, or £6.99 for just the rear. http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/plateservices?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2754
For the sake of the extra fiver, I thought it worth getting the pair to avoid unnecessary hassle.

PS - I would keep your old plates (which don't show GB/EU symbol) just in case the UK decides to leave the EU if a referendum happens in the next year or two.
