The smart is not in the £30 a year tax band, well at least mine isn't.
bad choice I'd have thought, to go to the effort of choosing a smart car, then manage to pick one that doesn't comply with the sub-120g/km emissions for tax, all the models on this list comply:

select manufacturers.manufacturer, models.model, vehicles.description, co2 from vehicles
inner join models on vehicles.modelid=models.modelid
inner join manufacturers on models.manufacturerid=manufacturers.manufacturerid
where vehicles.co2 < 121
and dbdate < 200705
and models.model like '%MCC%'
order by manufacturers.manufacturer, models.model

shows me 261 variants of the 2001-2006 smart that do comply (won't spam the whole list here)

Mine is the standard 80bhp model. Unless you get a first import 60bhp LHD example... you will pay £90. At least as far as I'm aware? LHD and even less power wasn't my prefernce to save money on tax. Was just making the point!

Neither is mine, published figures show they are all 121g/km except for the lhd 600cc which is 122g/km.

don't know where you're finding your figures, I'm going by the emissions data that the tax theifs use, and there's no shortage of rhd smart car models, heres just one rhd for sale that complies

After spunking £118 for 6 months tax just this morning, the cars on this list are looking mighty appealing!

Good bit of research though, some very useful information there!
I am about to throw £260 at taxing my impreza, the only thing that takes the edge off is that if the car had been 1st registered 10 days later the bill would be £460.

Paying road tax is always painful, I will be looking at these sorts of costs a lot more closely on my next purchase.
I'd say that was a lucky escape - I've been very carefull when buying recent cars (in the 2001 area) only one has been post march 2001 and the VED on that was only £20 more than pre March 2001 so I can live with that.

likewise, I had an early '01 S55 AMG, would have been a bit shocking if it was post-march.

In fact for any future big-litre toys, I think it makes sense in this regard to find the best pre-2001 model you can.

Almost satisfying to drive a >5L car, knowing you're only paying the same tax as a 1.6

Somewhere in Essex, I met the guy at the services near Bishops Stortford. £4250. He says he's got a buyer for that one but he's got another that he's imported and is in the process of registering.

All the *roadsters* other than the early 61bhp "light" are over I'm afraid.

From your list, the A160cdi is probably the most "grown up" for boring duties. Passengered over 100miles in one recently on Mway etc, and it took it all in it's stride, very quiet and accomplished.

Nice work. Watch out for Yaris though as D4D engine has quite a common problem with head gasket failure (see mini one D as well as it uses same engine). Just something to look out for anyway.
Ive had mine 2 years and have just fixed this issue but it wasn't cheap and that was doing it at home as well. Aside from this though it was problem free.. Used it for 40k miles on motorway and A roads and averaged 63mpg. When on an eco run I could get it to 74mpg on a tank.

Just to make you lot feel better about taxing your cars in the UK here's a link to the Irish tax authorities pricing that we have to pay

https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/motortaxinfotype.do

Anything over a 3 litre is E1553 (£1358stg) per year!!!!

Even my 1997 1.4 vw golf is E333 per year and my E36 318IS is E582 for the year,
so looks like you guys are getting a relative bargain compared to us.

Yes, same emissions as the standard roadster though.

I'm all too aware, I have vehicles registered in Ireland frown Irish car owners really do get screwed in every respect, even the specs are generally poorer on the cars, e.g. aircon is often classed as a luxury extra option, and rarely standard.

ongoing maintenance costs might push up the overall total cost of ownership?

The 90bhp Audi A2 tdi (2004MY only)in SE trim is a much better drive and ride than the A class. There isn't the leg room of the lwb A, but there is comfortable space for 2 adults in the rear, and a 3 belt rear seat was an option.

The A2 'Sport' has cheap, stiff spring/dampers and 17" wheels. Worth avoiding if you value your spine, although good after market Koni kits are available which I understand make a big difference.

Why rule out the Fabia 1.4 TDI just because it costs £60 extra a year to tax? Thats nothing in the overall cost of running a car and the Skoda would be a great choice.

There's a guy in the town i live in thats done the exact same to a 1993 mercedes e320 estate.

Madness having to pay over 1500euro to tax a car probably worthless than the tax disc!
In ireland it seems the more money you have the less tax you pay,
08 onwards cars pay a lot less road tax, Its green, eco, to save the environment ya see!!
(nothing to do with a having a dying/dead economy!!)

so if you cant afford a new car you get hammered in higher road taxes.

Would it not be greener and use less co2 to keep an older car running?
most 90's stuff have cats and other emission controls so wheres the sense in scrapping a perfectly decent car? do people think its old so must pollute the environment terribly?

people with older cars should be given a tax break and commended for doing it,
but in the throw away economy we live in, it seems its frowned upon by the government as they see it as not green or eco friendly to not scrap a perfectly decent car but to buy a new one that used a shed load of carbons to be built and transported half way across the world.

Sorry for going waaaaay off topic,

as you were gentlemen/ladies.........
