Impossible to find a diesel Volvo 940/740? HELP!
Discussion
According to how mmany left roughly 175 940 TD's not marked as Auto still around.

60 740's

I'd bet most are in the hands of old duffers who will run them until they, the owners, die

Keep an eye out on Retro Rides.I have seen two go on there during the last year, including a 240DL estate.

(that one was in Ireland mind you, but there was an estate manual that sold in the UK)
keep an eye out on these volvo forums, too. This one sold recently...

Ha, that's ace. His description of doing the timing is succinct.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ol8bzv-894
I get where you're coming from, OP. It's got oddball appeal, being big and ugly with an engine to match. Can't offer any useful advice on finding one, but I wish you luck.

As previously mentioned dont overlook an 850 TDI, An all round better can than a 7XX/9XX (In my experience), Treat the Excellent Audi AEL 5 pot to some belts and gen Volvo crank and cam seals, Decat it and fit an EGR blank and your good to go, Bombproof, Faster and a lovely diesely 5 pot warble Ive got one to compliment my remapped 855 T5!

He wants a manual. My folks had a 740 TD and replaced with a 940 TD in the 80's.
Sterling reliable workhorses both of them and I learnt a lot of my early driving on them.
We loved them. I'm not sure they were any worse than other large diesel estates of the time. More poke than the petrol 240 estate it replaced for us from memory.
I hope the OP finds a good one. I can understand the appeal!
