Well as it says in the advert they are not around every street corner and this one does sound like it is a genuine car.I just sold a red block 940 with 80K on the clock for 2500 so for something that rare and if its in good order then It's probably not over priced.

Rare doesn't mean valuable in this case - the estates are always in demand but sadly not the saloons. Also what they are advertised for and what they sell for are a way apart - past eBay auctions are your best bet for actual market value. I'd say maybe £1,500 if it's really nice and clean with a fresh MOT.

I’m curious if the op ever found one. That paragraph about the D24 engine and it’s servicing requirements, I actually wrote that years ago as I’ve had a couple.
I still own a 940 td manual estate, with a custom SS exhaust. It’s on 286k miles, they WILL last if you look after them. They are heavier on the front suspension than a petrol, and you notice this when cornering. Something else to be aware of is a ticking noise coming from the engine top end. It’s the vacuum pump pushrod and is relatively easily replaced, a very common issue.
No, they aren’t particularly fast or economical, the best I ever got was 43 mpg from my old 740 non intercooler td on a very long run.
So why bother? Well, that straight six thrum mixed with a diesel clatter accompaniment is addictive..and you can make them go if you want to, the old fashioned way, turning up the pump or playing with the turbo. Whether you’d want to risk it given the likely mileage on it is up to you.
Bear in mind also, the prehistoric diesel engineering, pre common rail, pre engine management system means that like old Mercedes w123 240s, the d24 is perfectly happy running on waste cooking oil. I’ve done It in the summer months for years.
Tbh, the only time you wish for a bit more urge is off the line. Short gearing and laggy turbo don’t help. But on the motorway is where it excels. Mid range torque is excellent, and it will sail past 100mph until it runs out of revs around 110-115, but this really is NOT a car that encourages spirited driving. Yes they are rare, that’s part of the appeal. I was gobsmacked to find that my car has a doppelgänger in the same town. Same year, same colour, diesel, identical down to the lacquer peel on the bonnet and roof. They’re out there..ya just got to look hard and be patient.
