Just waxed mine - 18 months in.

It's white and now it's slightly shiny as well as clean. But certainly not worth the two hours it took.

It will get a full day of cleaning, polishing, waxing and hoovering before it goes back.

I think if the car looks well cared for then anything that's borderline, stone chips, door dinks, marks on the interior etc will be more likely to be put down as wear and tear on the inspection. It's hard to argue a car is not looked after when it glistens and gleams.

On a more on-topic note, does anyone know if the Volvo S/V90 deals are available for a September delivery?

Doubt it - there were quite a few deals on the S90 Inscription @ £313 on a 3 + 17. Only one left that's about to end: http://www.kgvs.co.uk/personal-lease-cars/volvo/s9...

I know slightly off topic but I have to agree with previous few posters, PCH is a mindset, I still look after the car but it's nice not to be fanatical about it and worry about everything. I recently signed up to the Alfa 4c deal that went tits up and have been thinking about buying one, it's completely different proposition isn't it! If I bought one then I need to consider specification carefully and make sure when I take delivery it's sent for protection film and detailing to keep the paint nice whilst making sure mileage is kept low and I'm more careful where I park it/leave it. All in all, it makes me think I don't want to own the car...

For your own pleasure, by all means, but you'll get no thanks from the lease company, nor the inspector when you return the car.
The lease company must be loving the rise of private leases, a couple of years ago it was all company car drivers who could give a **** about car care, now we have this
I would contend that it's more about a car enthusiast wanting the car to look its best. I'm sure just as many 'don't give a toss' types abuse their lease car as always. How many times do you hear, 'I ragged the hire car from cold'. I think the vast majority of people look after things reasonably well.
They way I look at it:

1) While it's not "my" car, it is "mine" for 3 years.
2) Just because it's not "my" car doesn't mean I am not going to treat it as such
3) As someone says above they are more likely to mark down things which are borderline in your favour if you have clearly looked after the car
4) I like a clean car
5) My Mrs has a Vauxhall Viva on a PCP deal and that goes back in 3 years so we may look at buying this Fiesta when it's lease has expired as a replacement for the Viva.

I spent an hour on it yesterday with my Mrs helping, the supplying dealer obviously put some sort of wax on it (Supaguard or whatever) and done an awful job, leaving patches and smears, so went over it with a gentle cleanser and put some wax on it. Looks a lot better!

Don't get me wrong, I am all for keeping cars clean. It was more the fact that a dealer supplied a new car that instantly required work to get it presentable. PCH, PCP or even cash this is just not acceptable. How ever you finance it the product should come to you in 100% state.
You do have it looking good now.

It was a standard inscription with the top down camera option added, so I didn't exactly go mad with the options.

Like I said I'm most likely to go for the C Class at the end of April if the deals are available, but if something of interest pops up at a price I can't resist then I could be tempted providing it's a top brand, estate shaped and has the right toys onboard.
C class is a nice car - but for me the volvo is a step up and bigger - however at current prices I would probably go for the c class as well!

Would look at e class as other poster said - been a few deals on them lately - although not AMG Line. Was also some BMW 3 series deals around also (330d and 335d) - similar size to merc c class

The E-class AMG Line is mostly visual garnish. The only functional spec it adds is Comfort seats.

When I worked as a detailer we'd often see new cars come in.
Some were better, others were far worse.

I should have asked them to not do any special preparation but I suspect they are all done by the management company prior to even being assigned to owners. laugh

For most people it would not be an issue, just the OCD within me!

Anyone who was thinking of the Fiesta, I'd defo recommend it!
Really really impressed and very happy. The only thing is the media center is a bit....old school, and not very intuitive, but it does work.

What are they like at the end of a lease? I am thinking about replacing the nanny-mobile (Currently a Rover 75 Tourer). It is used for school runs and dog walks. The only child left at home is long past the age of grinding biscuits into the upholstery but the dog has never learnt to wipe his muddy feet before entering the car.

The idea of not having to care about how it looks does appeal.

Do they cut up rough when you hand back a car that smells of wet dog?

Depends on whether the vehicle inspector is a lover of the said 4 legged poo machines.

I'd write it off! wink

Anyone who follows Detailingworld will know >90% of all brandnew cars of all makes and models arrive with paintwork defects or contamination of some sort (to the trained eye).

Cars leave the factory on trains and attract iron filings like a magnet, the cars pick up dust / dirt / scratches while delivery drivers are maneuvering them about at the docks / transporter / dealer, and the dealer then rubs those (hard-to-spot) iron filings and dust particles into the paintwork when they shiny it up before the customer arrives, leaving the paint covered in swirls, marring and micro-scratches. Everything from 10k Dacias to 1m Ferraris suffer the same problems. They are the reasons why an increasing number of new-car buyers now ask dealers NOT to clean their new car before delivery (they prefer to clean it themselves, to reduce paintwork damage).

Of course, >90% of new-car owners just see shiny paint on day 1 and think (to their untrained eye) that the people on Detailingworld are obsessive maniacs.

OT a bit more...

Same here, I love a clean car and enjoy looking after it, it's been for a full detail and ceramic coating, it's for my exclusive use for 3 years, no different to if I "owned" it. But it's nice to not have to worry about re-sale value at the end.

People at work ask me why I bother cleaning it when it's "not mine". I just think that's an odd way to look at it.

Mind you I'll take it to the local scratch pad hand car wash for it's last clean before it goes back though, get a few swirls on it to match everyone elses.....

Totally agree. New cars prepped by dealers are generally in a poor state when its brand new regardless if your leasing buying PCP etc. it should arrive to you in a new state not with swirl marks on it. Recently saw a 140k Cayenne Turbo that was in a shocking state from a dealer prep.
My last two lease cars both had a new car detail done and the current one is washed properly every week and the interior done. Our other car gets the same.
I always make sure a dealer never preps the car and if it goes in for a service etc they never clean the outside.

My VW golf has 5 payments left on the lease and I'm looking to upgrade to a C class or 3 series.

What sort of wait times are there for these? 6 months early seems a bit too early to me!

The DSG box is just about the best semi-auto on the market. Very fast changes, smooth up or down, and instantly-responsive paddles. Fantastic bit of kit. You will never go back to manual for a weekday car.
Completely disagree with this - DSG is worse of both worlds, not best. It may depend on the drive train, but on my 190bhp Tdi Passat Alltrack in Auto mode it is too slow to respond - all the drive modes involve a compromise of one type or another.

Manual mode is better than auto - but I might well have a manual gearbox, as it is not as good as a normal manual and refuses to let me change up or down when I want as it decides it knows better.

I have also driven some other DSG cars - Golf gti etc and still not impressed. Much prefer a proper auto over a DSG.

Clean my leases via the polish car wash guys once a fortnight in summer....in fact, just had the first clean of the A45 since last November...it was black (its a white car!)

Once leased a C350 for 2 years and cleaned it once the day before it went back.

Car inspectors are not stupid - a scratch is a scratch, a clean car doesnt make that better or worse. And any modern car can get cleaned after months of not bothering and look pretty good. My car is as clean today as if I'd been waxing it all winter. I've had 6 leases and never been billed for anything other than stuff I should have been (badly done alloys, etc) and never had something where the car being dirty or clean made much difference.

Couldn't agree more Jay. Just because it's not your property, doesn't mean you shouldn't treat it as such. My PCH car is mine. I use it. I look after it - and I will continue to do so until it is returned. It says a lot about someone if they have a PCH car and treat it different than they would to a brand new car paid from their own cash.

I'm looking to rent out my current house in a few years, I'd be furious if somebody treated it like crap, purely because it wasn't theirs. It would be their home whilst they live in it, so they better had treat it like that.
