I wish I could find cars at this price with this mileage down south! I assume you live near Manchester? Working away from home I have to look fairly locally at the weekend and in my area, £7.5K buys you a 2011/2012 car with 70K miles on it!!
I live down south here are a few closer to home

Ive had an 170bhp 08 passat with the pd engine for over 120k, now sitting at 180k and it hasnt had a service for 50k, just use it to drive the dogs walkies. Lived its life in central london and besides running it low on oil about 10 times its still going strong. Latest addition to the household is a skoda superb estate 170 bhp, hands down best car i ever owned

Yours might have, but for every top of the range Passat listed on Autotrader, there are hundreds of S/SE spec ones without much of that stuff (ignoring your superfluous mentions of traction control and cruise control and heated wing mirrors and auto dimming rear view mirror since they must be standard on pretty much any D-segment car nowadays, right?!) especially climate control (an essential IMHO) and touchscreen infotainment/nav, and with crap looking flat cloth seats.

I've done 21k in my Insignia in 8 months, I'd rather be back in my old Prius.

If that's not damning enough then I don't know what is.

I have had all 3 (well nearly) I had a passat 140 se company car which to be honest I hated, I couldnt get on with VW's inability to make a car ride and handle decently, I managed to swap it for a much older mondeo. Then I had a 163bhp zetec mondeo that I put 40k miles on with no issues at all. I also had a SRI insignia for a few weeks whilst the older mondeo was being repaired. Went well enough but the bloody annoying indicators, the very cheap feeling interior and the way the bootlid stored water to piss don the back of your neck everytime you opened the boot means I would never recommend one.
Our of the 3 I would definitely have another mondeo, but probably not the 163 version, it was a lot thirstier than the older less powerful version for not a massive amount more speed.

I'd consider a 2007 onwards Volvo S80 D5 for that work. 40mpg+ from the D5 engine, miles nicer place to sit than any of those three, very comfortable with no pointless pretence and sportiness, better seats, better stereo, much nicer engine. 185BHP single turbo up to 2009, 205bhp twin turbo from 2010 and up to 215bhp from 2012 onwards. Far nicer power delivery than a 4 cylinder diesel of the same power output.

Same AW 6 speed autobox as the Vauxhall, service it and it'll last well. Probably less likely to kick you in the bks than a Ford Powershift box.

No pics of this one up but to give you an idea of what you could get

If you're happy with 160 bhp or so like the others have then the 2.4D and D3/D4 models are a possibility too.

Downsides? No "image" but then do your three suggestions have any positive associations??

Current shape S60 is in budget too

D3/D4 are Volvo 5 pot engines, avoid the 1.6 D2 as it's a st 4 pot Ford/PSA unit. Same goes for the 2.0D in the S80, yeuch.

I doubt cruise is standard. Nor is independant climate control (not just climate control). Though in any event what you said was they are poorly equipped. I don't believe even TC, heated rear mirrors etc is "poorly equipped".

Nor does mine have "flat cloth" seats either, but she is the 170bhp so also lowered a fraction with sports seats and not bad at all handling for an estate.

Which is kinda my point. Cruise control and dual zone climate control are standard on all mk4 Mondeos bar the Edge - the most basic trim level.

Considering stability control is pretty much mandatory in all new cars and I don't ever recall driving a car made in the last 15 years that didn't have heated mirrors, I'd not consider any car well-equipped if these features were mentioned in isolation. They're just normal features you'd expect any car to have.

I suppose you're going to raise the fact it's got ABS, alloy wheels, and electric rear windows now? hehe

I was going to save those for later wink And one touch all round windows at that.......

Mind, one other thing to consider is the interior of the Passat looks (IMHO) quite reasonable, whereas the Ford looks (again, just my view, having sold a Mondeo to buy a Passat) cheaper........

ignore the mileage as these things laugh at big numbers. only likely issue you will find is rear arm bushes like to wear but they are available separate from the arms and last set I did was around £30/side. other than that you can run them all day every day without issue.

personally i'd keep hunting till I found something at least titanium spec with 1/2 leather full leather is rare as rocking horse poop on the mk4, facelifted in 2010 which brought a number of small changes DRLs are the main giveaway but the facelift cars certainly do driver better imo

It's a 2.0 diesel. They're not designed to be performance cars tongue out

True, but mine is a 2.0 Diesel and it is rather faster than that, fuel economy as good too.

The Passat is too expensive for what it is, overrated and poorly equipped and generally about as exciting as a house brick.

She also has 170 bhp and 0-60 in less than 8 seconds... Not too bad and certainly enough to get an overtake done, yet returns 50mpg...
Have had 2 Passats and 2 golfs in the family. agreed, the Passats were OK on specification, but like all VWs, just too dear now that cars other than VW/Volvo/Saab don,t corrode. VW legend partly built on superb ads in 60s/70s

I am perhaps rather too proud of my Passat I agree... But she is nippy, has lots of gadgets and gets 50mpg - now when your other car is a 5.0 V8 you really appreciate that...

Guys, bit concerned the 163 model is so much thistier than the 140? What would a 163 do on, say a 70-75 2 hour motorway cruise (which is what my work journey is made up of now)..

Mulling over going to visit a 163 Titanium X up for sale near me. Owner has just reduced price a second time to £5995 and its a facelift 60 plate car with 89K on clock.... seems a lot of high spec car for the money....

The difference between the 2.2 & the 2.0 is 4mpg, we don't have a 163 model but that's the difference between the 197 & 140bhp models we have.

My old 2010 zetec 163 would get at least 50 mpg plus at 70 to 75 on a motorway run.
My 2.2 Tit X auto gets about 40 tops.
