How reliable is it, I'd be worried about it throwing a fault one day on a nice clear road and causing a pileup
It's an extra safety net. If I needed to stop I'd be bending that brake pedal but if the system triggered and applied the brakes a fraction of a second sooner that's brilliant and could avoid an accident.

Agreed. It's fitted to the Powerfully Built's Bentley at work, I don't like it because it makes for quite an unrelaxed journey due to wanting to reach its set speed urgently & seemingly braking quite heavily when it detects another vehicle.
If you find one for sale OP give it a good test drive to see if you like it.
I think it's ashleyman who had a thread running about myriad issues on his recently leased Golf R.
The most scary being it trying to accelerate in traffic with ACC set!
I suppose any safety or convenience system could fail & leave you without it but usually it would just mean brakes without ABS or something.
I've not had any problems with mine in just over a year and coming up to 27k miles. Most of my driving is just sat on the motorway so I use it nearly all the time. Makes commuting so much more relaxing and I don't think I'd want to be without.
I think the systems are intelligent enough to just deactivate if any kind of fault is detected, rather than start behaving weirdly.
