£3000 budget play it safe and go n/a ie civic/clio and best example you can find without travelling to the other end of the country.

SEAT Cupra or Cupra R, decent performance, practical and still (subjectively) a good looking car.

VW MK2 Golf GTi - An appreciating classic and arguably one of the best hot hatches ever made. More character than anything else mentioned so far in this thread. Marginally biased as I owned one for 5 years but superb looking motors, quick even by todays standards and fantastic to drive. A real headturner.

If by character you mean slow, rattly, generally rusty and with a terrible interior then yes you are correct. Personally I see much more character in the CTR and impreza than in a rattly old Golf.

You should consider the 207 GTi. Massively overshadowed by the Clio 197 of the same era but a solid little car nonetheless. Clio does have the legs through the corners but the 207 has a little cherry of an engine for commuting/road use with so much workable power & low down torque (same 1.6T from the Cooper S).

Get one thats had its chain tensioner sorted and you can really get a proper bargain wee car
I wouldn't recommend that era of Prince engine to anyone, death rattle, coking up and drinking oil for fun aren't characteristics of a solid engine IMO. Yes, they're good engine performance wise but reliable they aint!

For fairly low mile city driving it'd stick to something NA like the Civic or the Clio. I've recently been considering cars just like this in exactly this price bracket and they're the two I ended up narrowed down to.
Most of them with 60+k miles have had the timing chain issue sorted already. If you get a low mileage one its a £50 fix to pop the updated tensioner on it before the chain gets damaged. All direct injection engines suffer from coking up, which again is an easy fix for an I4. Oil consumptions... Yeah they do that, ive done 5k miles in mine so far, the turbo recirc valve went the day I got it (£130 for a new one and 10 minute job to fit) but apart from that its had no problems. It has used almost a litre of oil in the 5k miles though.

I couldn't say but it's the same 1.6T engine they have in now & people rave about the Mini.

OP if you want N/A the Clio is the best by some margin, but also worth a look which will leave you 1k to go towards the next car on from this one is GTI 180.

It isnt the same engine in the current Minis. BMW developed a new 2.0turbo for the current model to replace the PSA/BMW developed prince engine. They implemented this new engine in 2013.

The prince 1.6T is however in the current line up of 208GTi, 308GTi and RCZ's. It also currently holds the specific output record for a 1.6 in its RCZ R form (260bhp I believe). They refreshed the engine for the next generation & fixxed the timing chain issue (you can retrofit this fix to the older engine for minimal cost). Most of them havnt had enough mileage put on them to experience the oil consumption issues of the old one so only time will tell if they have fixxed that or not.

As I said they are solid wee cars, they DO have potentially fatal issues (oil consumption and chain) however if you know to look out for them (check oil, listen for diesel-ey noises when warmed up) they are relatively cheap to fix, they do coke up but as do most modern DI engines once they past 80-100k miles or so and again that is an easy and cheap fix.

If you want a N/A engine, pay a little more and get a Clio RS, I have driven an older one and they are fantastic cars. If you, like me, like a smaller BOOOSTED engine then the 207 is a good wee motor.

As for the handling comparison, 207 is quicker on the power with a much more usable power band especially for road use, the engine is also far more tuneable. However for steering feel the clio is the better car and you just cant beat it for chuckability into the corners, however the 207 feels planted, if a bit numb, so is good for commuting rather than raw B road use.

Leftfield shout. What about a 3.2 Audi A3? Basically a Golf R32 in a posh frock, and much better at coping with London's roads than many of the more 'focused' choices. Even DSG as an option...

Fiesta ST. 2.0L naturally aspirated goodness.

Utterly brilliant fun at legal speeds and a car you can push on without risking jail time.

LOL,,, I like to be a voyeur sometimes smile

I think for me the EP3 wins it, I need it to be something of a cart horse and while the clio would be good I need something a little bigger, thanks for all the replies.

Do have a good poke around in the clio , i was always amazed how much stuff i could cram in there due to the depth of the boot.

The hills i run in i often meet a couple of chaps who downhill mountain bike , somehow they wedge 2 downhill bikes plus all there pads/helmets in a clio 182.

I had a moped in my K11 Micra in a similar manner, never took any pictures though. Did fit 400kg of wood discs in it though with pictural evidence of the rear suspension, pretty much entirely bottomed out biggrin.

My Clio 182 Trophy was bulletproof for the year/10k miles I had it, only needed <£100 worth of repairs. Now on a 172 Cup which is sensational; only other car I'd consider would be an EP3 Type R but you'll be at the bottom end of the market for that budget. Whereas you'll get a brilliant Clio for £3k.

Has to be a EP3 CTR. They go for ever and you'll never get tired of that redline (though your mrs, neighbours, other road users may not)

Btw mine was 168k mileage, 53 plate. I got it for less than £2k and nothing noticeable ever went wrong.

This is exactly what I want to hear as there are plenty of EP3s for around £2-3k that are on circa 100-130k.

Think, if you spent £3k now an did 30k in the next few years and sold for around £2k then in my opinion that's pretty good going.
