Anyone still waiting? Anyone given up?

I've been without my MBP since it was stolen in early 2015. Since then I've been holding off because I figured surely it's going to get updated soon... the competitors were getting Skylake, MacRumors and co seemed to be convinced that Apple were gearing up to bring out new ones with Skylake, etc. Despite this several shows have come and gone with the Macbook Pro - well, any Mac kit really - being conspicuously absent.

I'm at the point now where I really need a laptop ASAP but cannot in good conscience drop a large chunk of money on tech which is quite frankly embarrassingly ancient. I mean the current MBP, still sold for a kings ransom, has a Broadwell processor for crying out loud. The larger ones have a Haswell one. Still. In 2016.

So - are the ubiquitous rumours actually true this time? Are Apple poised to refresh the Mac lineup in October or has everyone given up bothering to wait now?

EDIT: I think this speaks volumes..

Hoping for an imminent refresh.

Mac Rumours seems pretty convinced.

Not sure I need an OLED function bar above the keyboard mind!

Getting seriously hacked off with the wait. If Logic Pro ran on Windows I'd probably have given up on Apple by now.

Not after a MacBook but they had better get some good updates. The OLED touch strip seems a bit gimmicky though, they will probably roll that out to other keyboards, have to wait and see.

I'm glad I ordered when they did the last spec bump to the 15"! I think the release has to be within the next month, but then you're already looking at MacRumours, so you know basically everything.

I currently have a 2013 MBP Retina and it does the job well but would love to see something slightly slimmer close to the older Macbook Air in size, mainly for travel. Other than that I just fancy a chance to have a new toy.

As above, they can almost not justify not updating the lineup now.
I'm especially curious to see what they want to do with their Mac Pro. The thing hasn't been updated since release :/.

Bit of the problem is, I think, that they make so much money bringing out a new phone every year, everything else is just pocket change in comparison.

Well, this is it. I guess it depends on what company Apple wants to be?

I know it's a bit trite but I find it hard to believe that Steve Jobs would've allowed the Mac lineup to be neglected for this long. As remarked the Mac Pro hasn't been refreshed since it was launched. I mean generally speaking they are still serviceable bits of kit, but that's all you can really say about them. The current Dell XPS 15 is looking very attractive now..

A big part of the issue has been Intel, there just hasn't been the chips needed, which is why the last 'update' was so small. They've changed their Tic Toc cycle to a Tic Toc Toc which means things are progressing much slower than they used to.

Still waiting for the Macbook Pro too but I'm getting a bit hacked off with it now tbh. If it doesn't appear by the end of this month, I'll just give up and buy a Windows laptop with a Skylake\10xx GPU combo instead.

I nearly bought a Dell XPS last week but thought I'd hold off and see if a new MBP comes out in October.

Fortunately I don't neeeed a new laptop for a couple of months but I'm definitely getting impatient with the total lack of information and will they / won't they!

I am waiting for the new Macbook Pro retina to replace my 2012 model. I am hoping it will be announced at the end of October otherwise will probably go for the latest Dell XPS.

I've got the current Dell XPS and while it is a very nice machine, with the display almost running through the edges, it's heavier and thicker than I expected.
Also, beware what apps you use as not all ar optimised for such a high res. I went for the full hd screen as I work with a lot of legacy software and it's unworkable on such a high res :/

Not to mention remote desktops hehe

Ditto. My XPS15 has been passed on to another user and I've gone back to my 2015 MBPr.
Specs and speed ain't everything.

I've been after a new Mac for 10mths. The screen on my 2011 MBA 11" has been damaged to the point I'm using about 7" of it now at best. It'll be replaced this month one way or another.

I've been prepping the way by looking at Windows machines. The Dell XPS 13 with the touch screen is really very good IMO. Have been through all the software I use and can replace all of it relatively cheaply.

The resolution note above is one thing to bear in mind, so will have another play if Apple don't come up with something good.

Dell are releasing a refreshed model tomorrow with Kaby Lake processors...

As for the MBP rumours...the replacement of the function keys is a gimmick as far as I'm concerned. I would bet money on there being a lot of issues with it, and now having played with an XPS 13 they're going to need to do something very decent to keep me buying Macs.

The 13" Retina MBP is still a good machine, but the competition has moved on a long way now.

Tbh, coming from a regular MBP or MBA, the full HD will be a major upgrade on it's own. Especially on the 13" it's more than enough imho.
If you come from the MBPr, the 4k will be a nice upgrade (don't know if you could see the difference though) but, check out which applications you use and see if they can cope with such a high res.

Put it differently, I've got a friend who uses SketchUp and bought a 4K laptop, he set it to full HD and hasn't changed it back yet as sketchup is unworkable in such a high res :/.

PS: The 4K on the Dell is always glossy and touchscreen, while the full hd is non-touch and matte. I like the matte display a lot as it reflects office TL tubes a lot less (the MBP was annoying to get aligned properly), but I do miss the touch after I've been using a touch laptop for a while. It's funny how quickly you get used to it.

Depends what they do with it.

If - as rumoured- it has no magsafe, all USB-C, no headphone jack, and no SD slot (which even my 13" air has, and is a deal breaker for me), as soon as the current version is discontinued I will buy it from the refurb store (where they sell off the unsold stock) and stick with that.

I am not a spec wker, don't really care what brand chip is in it, and I couldn't care less about the (rumoured) touch strip - I just want it to be practical (ie, no dongles required for simple daily usage stuff) , have exceptional battery life, be light, and be reliable.

MY MBA is on its last legs with the battery needing replacing and the charging port is partially burnt out so getting it to charge consistently is hard. I want to move back to a Pro but im not buying an 18 month old machine so I am waiting. The amount of flash storage needs to rise a lot though because 128gb is pretty much norm in an iphone 7.

Thanks.

I tried a matte screen version about 6mths ago and was underwhelmed by the machine generally, especially the screen. Possibly because the Macs I was comparing it to and that I've been using for years have gloss screens.

I'm in exactly the same position. Mine will be three years old in a couple of months and I fancy something a bit faster and lighter.
