If they haven't got an R line and they aren't going to get an R line then surely the salesman did all he could.
Yep and he offered an alternative to drive too, what was he supposed to do?

We get people in asking about Renaultsport, we don't run Renaultsport, never will so rather than wasting too much time we direct them to a dealer who does, usually they say "oh that is too far away I won't bother" obviously they weren't that interested then!
I get that they didn't have one, but they didn't even attempt to find one elsewhere that I could look at, which I would have made the effort to travel and see. IIRC he said "there's not many about" then offered the lower spec to look at.

I'm not going to buy an R-Line without at least seeing one in the flesh, and potentially driving am I? They must not have needed the business.

As it happens, my wife is in a 4 year old Octavia at the moment that we've had from new and the BM at our local dealership where we bought practically calls me every month trying to get us into a new one, and tbf he's offered me some absolutely cracking deals. No need to swap it at the moment, but it's nice to se they are willing to put in the work.

So why not put in a bit of effort yourself and find a garage with one? Doesn't even need to be brand new.

Very few people who have ordered the latest (2016 model) Tiguan R-Line will have seen one, much less driven one.

X5 sat on 12mths leadtime for years and no dealer had them for test drive - they didn't need to, people just ordered them.

I did pop by in my new car though, later that day, having done a nice easy deal down the road. Way to chuck away a grand on a Wednesday afternoon.
That's almost as excruciatingly embarrassing as watching an episode of The Office.

I bet they were mortified wink

To add some balance.

Dad recently purchased a lovely Jag XE diesel R-Sport thing from Guy Salmon Jaguar in Ascot

I arrived before my old Man and was having a poke about a variety of cars. This guy comes up and starts chatting to me about my Scirocco and says he's into drifting himself etc.
We are chatting for about 15 minutes before he even gets to the topic of if he could help me or if I was looking, and I said well I'm not myself but my old man is and he just happened to turn up at this point.

So off they went and struck a deal. The salesman was very nice and friendly, he knew a fair amount and what he didn't know, he would go and check, we were offered biscuits and tea and hot chocolate and was reasonable when it came to negotiations, and despite my Dad being a cash buyer put him in touch with the finance department which actually saved him another £600 or so on the purchase price of the car (Jaguar were doing a deal with £1500 deposit contribution if purchased with finance).

From my point of the view the whole process of buying the car was painless.

The only thing that wasn't done, was there were some polish residue/minor chip on the boot spoiler which were apparently going to be touched up, but they weren't. The salesman, Alex, was on holiday the week between agreeing to buy and picking the car up so probably left to someone else to deal with.
But that minor thing aside it was a lovely experience and if I was in the market to buy a Jag (and the XE is a fking lovely car by the way) then I would be going straight back there.

That being said, I have had my share of ste dealers, usually smaller independant ones. When I was buying a Mk5 GTI many years ago there was one for sale just up the road from me, again I was a cash buyer and said could I test drive it, and they said "when finance is arranged".
I said, I'm a cash buyer, I don't want finance then they said no test drive. Well fk you.

I've had some mixed experiences elsewhere, I go into Audi and they look down on you, it's a Saturday so of course I'm going to be in trackies and hoody.

Conversely Porsche Reading were brilliant, not quite for cars but - we were in my mates Oak Green Mk2 GTI, went in looking scruffy at 3pm on a Saturday, hello sir how are you today, etc etc. I enquired about buying Porsche oil / coolant caps for my Mk5 GTI (common "upgrade") - of course sir we will just check to see if we have any here, do you want a coffee while you want?
10 minutes later sorry we don't have in stock but just grab a phone number we will order them for you today to be here on Tuesday , Tuesday 11am rolled around, phonecall, hello sir your parts are here.

Indeed. Cost Audi £12k in their case. A mate of mine has bought several Nissan GTRs and he wears trackies most of the time.

John, dunno about you but after a long hard week you wake up inn saturday and don't want to wear jeans or formal trousers, a nice set of comfy tracksuit bottoms which are soft and light are just the ticket.

Of course what one wears is not to really be judged by others...

Absolutely! It's the same as assuming that anyone with a tattoo on show, must be a thug! Silly attitude to have. The first thing I do once relaxing at home is to put on some trackies & a baseball cap. I don't particularly have much time for the "stereotypes" out there who like to judge people on what they wear! I would like to add that probably one of my baseball caps cost more than alot of smart trousers, but I know which I prefer to wear!

Everyone has a story about being taken for a mug when trying to buy a car.

Every dealer has a thousand stories about being taken for a mug when trying to sell a car.

Neither the buyer, nor the seller, will get it right every time.

The Swiss Toni approach works. Thats why it exists. It just doesnt work on us superhero car dorks. We just need to remember when car shopping to wear our superhero outfits, so Toni knows not to bother.

Just a personal thing where historically I've been used to seeing a car, checking it over, having a chat with the sales dude, and if he and the car seem ok having a bit of the expected toing and froing over the price.

With the £95 admin fees places you know it's more of a take-it or leave-it type attitude, and the few times I've been down this road before the salesmen have seemed rude, and pushy on all the other 'extras'. I'd usually rather not bother, especially as the prices don't seem anything extra-cheap.

To be fair to this crowd that I bought the XKR from, the salesman himself was a little abashed about the £95 fee but took the time to explain their sales approach, and I was already forwarned by the fee being shown in their showroom photos, so wasn't expecting anything other than 'that's the price, sir'.

I hate those £95 admin fee places too.
There's loads of dealers out there - I wouldn't touch them.
