I disagree. Luxo 4x4 and a roadster, leaving 3rd car to be a classic or a balls out racer.

Currently looking for a ffrr to add to my Elise to make the weekday/weekend pairing. I need a 4x4 for towing my race car and having driven a 4.2 sc Rangerover just can't see past them when browsing the classifieds.
I was the same until I bought this:

v8 - classic - can tow as much - less to go wrong - going up in value - cheap to buy - money saved will pay for a bespoke engine, should end up faster than the FFRR smile

I think the OPs combination is great - my first thoughts would be large 4x4 (towing ability / 5 people / tip runs / off-road / etc) and then small 2 seater convertible (handling, open, fun)
Agreed.

My current combination:

I maintain that the perfect fleet really needs three vehicles, a 4x4, a roadster and a fast comfy barge. Unfortunately that's expensive so currently I just have the two above though an Audi W12 or similar would round it out nicely.
My 2 car project starts later this year; change the M135 for either a Range Rover or a Grand Cherokee for about £15k.

Then a 996 for weekend/occasional commuting duties.

Lovely stuff.

These are perfect cos they're all I can afford, and fitted the brief.
Daily: don't care if it gets dinged, 60mpg, £30 tax, high driving position, soft, practical.

fun: Noise, character, engagement.

Disco 3 HSE & a 997 C2S for me. My wife drives a Leon, and I use an E220 estate for some work duties. The Disco/911 are strictly 'mine and mine only' cars wink Both combined pretty much cover all of my needs.

Two cars is a tough one to choose as ideally you want something totally engaging and built for nothing but driving for what would be the 'weekender' and then something that's an all rounder for the rest of the time.

I own an E320 CDI as my daily car now which ticks a lot of boxes. Comfy, decent pace, good on fuel and capable of carrying everything I need it to. I also own a CLS63 which offers even more comfort and features but with a hell of a lot of power. That at the moment at least is a nice pair of vehicles. I guess it's cheating that I have a Twingo 133 which his a bit more back to basics.

I guess ideally I'd like something comfy/economical like a newer E-Class and something like a really low mileage SL55. I'm basically a Merc tart but I do like a bit of comfort to go with the speed.

Two won't do....
Go for Four:

Boring & practical
Classic Cruiser
Fun Road
Track

Eg
XC60
XJS or XJC
Elise, MR2
Caterham

That would be a nearly new fleet for less than 100k

Only 2 cars is a tough one to cover all bases, if you count the wife's car with it. If it's 2 cars only for you, then it becomes easier. But even 3 in the family is a compromise to truly cover all IMO, as I would like my full on driver's car/performance car to be separated from my convertible, as convertibles normally are compromised performance cars.

So for absolutely 2 cars only, including wife's I would say a 4x4 large SUV and a GT Coupe. So let's say a Range Rover and a Camaro SS, Mustang GT or Maserati etc.

If only 2 cars for myself plus wife's, then Range Rover for wife, GT Coupe and 2-seater open top fast car, such as an Elise for me.

Perfect would be, Range Rover for wife. A super saloon V8 manual for my daily driver. A 2-seater performance car such as a Ferrari 458 or even an Exige. And a breeze roadster for the perfect days during summer and spring, such as a latest generation MX-5 or something like that, as it doesn't really need to be that fast since I would already have a real fast car. That would be paradise.

But I don't want to drive around the whole week in a stbox or slow car. I want my daily to be some what of a performance car too while being practical. That car is a super saloon. Or if you compromise, at least a GT coupe.

Quite happy with my two.

Got a mk3 MR2 for daily driver duties. It's cheap so I can park it anywhere without worries of dings, it's light on consumables and fuel, and the roof comes off to make the daily commute more pleasant.

My practical/weekend car when I need luggage or people space is a Monaro CV8. Loads of character, plenty of space for four, cheap to run (apart from fuel), and sounds lovely.

Also have a bike for when I want to dress in leather cool

Seems the perfect 2 car garage depends on what you need from each vehicle...

For me a single young lad I don't really have the need for a super practical car. Having just ordered a a5 coupe i would pick that as a every day drive and any long journeys. For the second it would have to be a 300 bhp plus sports car. I am looking at something like a 350z or an older s3.

In line with the mix that a few others seem to have... 1 4x4 for comfort, 1 2-seater convertible for posing, and another to share with the OH! biggrin

These are not necessarily my actual cars as I need to get some photos sorted sometime I suppose.

Oh, and one of these to sporadically have some fun on when it's warm.

My choice would be:

E90 M3 - Currently looking for the right one
TVR Cerbera - I have one sitting in the garage

My wife has a Octavia VRS estate (DSG / petrol) which is perfect for family duties and tip runs.

Is the one with active suspension for taking the piss out of BMW's off frame?

So what is the one which is in frame for then?

This is an interesting topic as I've recently gone down the same route. Although, I've done it a bit differently. I've gone for fast and fun.

Fast and fun
2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STI JDM

Cheap, fun and reasonably economical
2000 Subaru Impreza Sport Special

I'm nearly in a happy place with my two now...

Z20LET powered Astra soon to be running around 250hp
Forged Evo VI GSR soon to be running just under 500hp

Both are fast and guzzle fuel, but my journey to work is 4 miles each way and I don't do many miles in a year anyway. Astra for every day use, runs to the tip, care-free parking etc... Evo for nice days, special occasions and just generally for putting a smile on my face smile
