Fine for older kids. Child cruelty for babies.

Daughter has a Honda Jazz, a toddler and new baby. She couldn't fit the stuff she needed for an overnight stay into her car. Its magic seats are useless when the back of the car is filled with two huge child-seats.
I'm not taking the pee, but what actually needs to go in to that space for an overnight stay?

Even with baby seats, my folks would have been able to use that amount of space for a two week holiday!

The boot is pretty well entirely filled by a Baby Jogger City Select Duo. She carries most other stuff in the front passenger seat/well. The sticking point was getting the baby's crib in - it wouldn't go behind the front seats due to the bulk of the child seats.

To be fair, many people would think a car like Tiguan should be more than adequate, but we have a Maclaren folding stroller which is kept in the wife's Tiguan. If she goes supermarket shopping there's only space around it to fit a couple of carrier bags - the rest has to go in the car.

It's all temporary though - once they approaching three they refuse to go in a stroller so it can be dumped.

beer

Clearly things have moved on in terms of safety, so perhaps as someone else mentioned, this is more to do with not being able to throw the baby on the back seat in a carry cot and due to people back then not driving as much, or, simply not bothering if they didn't have space etc.

It does seem quite bizarre today to think that some parents thought a baby on their lap in the front was the safest place within the vehicle, whilst others, like my folks, never let us sit in the front and suggested the back was the safest place....with no seat belts, of course.

I still struggle to understand how people feel they won't be able to cope with something like a Zafira, though!

My light-hearted ribbing was more to do with those situations.

Well. We managed with a Mk1 TT until child 1 was just about 2. she'd fit in OK now, but there's an awkward phase where the little legs stick straight out forwards and just don't fit. So we bought a 3 box 4 door saloon (Saab). Now with 2 kids it all goes in fine, including a bugaboo.

The neighbours manage with a mk 5 Golf, and a bugaboo.

So we're not all mad. It's basically about how much of the plastic st you actually need, and how much of it you believe you need because you listen to the sales bks and don't stop to apply some common sense.

These threads are a little irritating. They are suggesting that the parents of the 1960's wouldn't swap their Gilman imp for a 2017 FFRR. They would. In fact they would swap for a 1970 FFRR. Why didn't they then? Because cars have become more affordable due to finance?

It's like saying "what changed? I grew up in a 2 up, 2 down and was fine. Why do people want a 5 bedroom house?"
You have to admit its a bit stupid though. Our neighbour has just changed her BMW 135 for a 335 estate solely due to having a baby. How fking much extra room does she need?
You needn't worry yourself.

Who knows? But really, does it bother people that much? Do you NEED a Range Rover?

Our family car is a Touran 7 seater, I've got three kids. Could someone please suggest a small car that fits three kids seats on the rear bench, which allows the seatbelts to be fastened with the seats still in position?

When my son was 2 months old (now 10 months), I sold my VXR8 and bought an Abarth 500.

Does that make me some kind of PH god?

Depends on the baby I suppose, ours has severe reflux so when we go to friends and family we take a few things to keep her amused, if she were a bit more content we could probably just throw in a changing bag and carrier and the wifes Fiat 500 would be fine. As it stands we'll be getting a mid-size hatchback so she has a bit more space (and power) to cover all bases.

I'd quite like an estate, this has more to do with being able to fit my golf clubs in, doing tip runs and picking up various bits for the house as it's still a work in progress. I'd happily have something cheap and buzzy like a Swift Sport otherwise.

Child seats are bloody huge now, as are pushchairs. Our pushchair takes up a good amount of V70 boot space.

What seats did you use. I had a Focus about 2012 and no way could I get the kids seat belts on when the kids were all sat down. This was possible in a Ford Falcon, but that has a rear bench a few cm wider than an S-Class.

Depends how committed you are. We had a Jaguar XKR with a 'side sleeper' baby seat thing, which is belted in at each side, and designed to sit sideways. Plenty of boot space for the pushchair and nappies wink
