genuine question - Does an F Type R suit the needs? never looked at the rear seats so not sure.

Equally, how about a Tesla?
F type has no back seats at all. Capacious boot though, so depends how fat well padded your kids are, but I bet they'd fit...

Might be coming across as obstructive here (In a hold on to that 911 Turbo sort of way) but how about a 3rd car? A cheaper well used C or E Class or 3 or 5 Series Estates all spring to mind as facilitators of Le camping (or not so cheap not so well used budget permitting) and u get to keep the 911 as fun car.
Actually, this is a pretty good idea. The OP clearly has a few quid (he's in a "two Porsche family"), so what about keeping the 911, and buying something like a secondhand E60 535d for carting the kids around in.

It's got the right badge (BMW), loads of grunt (535d engine), enough doors (four), and plenty of luggage space (large saloon boot). Plus, the wife probably won't mind driving it.

Or, if MPG isn't a concern, save even more money, and get a V8-powered petrol 5-Series.

Ok, so second car idea didn't work in practice. I got a TJ Wrangler that turned out to be a bad idea, even though it is fun off road, on road it isn't that great. Anyway, having two cars wasn't as much fun as it sounded.

So great options on this thread that I hadn't considered though, I am going to test drive as many as I can and report back.

I have a current Wrangler for offroading. It is an awful thing on the road, but that is their rep.

Too much of a snob to own an Audi but bought a Jeep scratchchin

We really need to know what brands are acceptable. RS6 would seen to fit the bill and I'm sure 70k would get you a great example.

Or something left field like an early RR Phantom.

Fair, somehow having a jeep feels kind of cool knowing I have a 911 turbo, but would feel a lot less cool if it was my only car.

What do people think of a G-Wagon?

G-wagen fantastic but unless you up your budget it would be a bottom of the barrell secondhand version.

If you do buy one apparently the slr722 engine will fit in!!!!

Just after Christmas I was on the Autobahn cruising at 120mph for about 20 minutes with a new G wagon behind me.

Pulled in to get petrol and it pulled in too. Out of it stepped a smart looking mother and grand mother. In the back were two sleeping toddlers and a dog.

When she started it up I noticed the two side exhausts and a positively naughty exhaust note.

Based on this I'd tell you to try one at as they're both quick, civilised enough and super cool.

All from a casual observers perspective of course... smile

Surely just keep the 911 and get something like a Ford Galaxy, VW Sharran etc for the camping etc. As soon as you get into camping, the tents are massive, there's so much great gear, you need a big wagon. I ended up with a van, so I could get the MTBs in too! But a Sharran or really big estate is where I'd be looking. And some whisper roof bars and a big ski box.

Mate got into camping, using their focus, added a roof box....bought a new discovery........added a rooofbox!! You can see where this goes, can't you!? I can see him eyeing up the van with envy!! lol

Seriously, get the right tool for the job. And keep the 911 Turbo. Just the worlds best car IMHO.

I am really against the two cars thing, probably because I live a 5 minute drive from the station and barely use one car on weekends due to baby. I do agree on the turbo being a fantastic car, it is epic, but when the kids are bigger I can re asses.

For now I want to test drive:

E63 AMG Wagon
RS6 Wagon
Maserati Granturismo MC Stradale (use wife's car for camping. As I understand it, this is the only 4 seat coupe that can take an isofix rear facing baby seat in the back properly)
Tesla (wife wants me to drive one but I am not so keen)
Panamera turbo

All of the above need to be one or max two years old if not new, looking at second hand prices in the basically new range I think there is a fair whack of depreciation in year one for all of these. Thanks for all of the advice

So,

I test drove all of the above, then I test drove a bunch of Astons and an MC Stradale. Then a bunch of different 911's. None of them worked magic on me and it seems that I just can't buy cars for practical reasons. We all have our limitations, so I accepted who I am and am taking delivery of a 2016 Dynamite Red R8 V10 plus on Wednesday. It ticks no boxes, but I love this car, I have never actually yearned to drive a thing, but I do this.

Pics will eventually follow

I did kind of blow the budget even getting the R8. Original budget, 60K, cost of car, £115K... I think the Lambo would have been beyond even my man-math powers. Next time smile

Try this site, as they seem down your street. If you like the defender and want something tarted up, they look awesome. They have different editions and with luxury seats etc

Wow, so you started by wanting something more practical, and ended up topping up the budget to the tune of £45k to buy a car without any back seats at all. Nice work hehe

Respect. I would have probably made a similar choice (but on a much lower budget smile)
