Whichever you enjoy driving most. Sounds a glib answer, but it's the case.

One will be slightly quicker, one makes a distinctive noise which you may or may not like. One will use slightly less fuel - allegedly.

Both will be fine for your intended purpose.

I have a 218i gran tourer on order with the 1.5 136hp engine, on the test drive it felt perfectly adequate - nippy low down but runs out of puff higher up the revs, very refined though.

Try and get a test drive of both that will make your mind up for you

If you're not much of a petrol head, I imagine you'll be very happy with the 118i. It's really not a bad car and you'd probably prefer it to the 120i (as it's a little cheaper to buy and run but still quick enough, especially compared to your old Golf)

If you are a big petrolhead, try the M135i or M140i. I think that'd be overkill for what you want though!

Hello, what's the noise you are referring to, and which one makes the noise?

The 118i will probably sound a little more interesting because it's a 3-cylinder.

3 cylinder engines can make a very enjoyable noise, much more so than a 4 pot IMHO.

Out of those two I'd have the 120i though, as nobody has ever found themselves in a scenario where they wish their car had a bit less power.

So basically I think I'm going to stick with the 118i based on the overall feedback here.

The 118i is quite local (I'm in London) and the 120i is in Dundee!!

Just found out that the 120i does not have servotronic steering, cruise control, or even parking sensors! All of which the 118i does.

Add all that up for a car that's got jut 40bhp more and gets to 0-60 in 1 second quicker, and I'm not sure it's actually worth it.

Ok so how about this question, lastly.

Option of having a

118i (1.5, 3 cylinder 136bhp)
or
120i (1.6, 4 cylinder 177bhp)

Same price, same age (2016) and same sort of mileage.

What should I go for?
I guess this would come down to how much incidentals cost - i.e. tax, MPG etc; I assume the 120i might cost a little bit more day to day but it wouldn't be a huge difference. However sounds like the 118i might be the better option given your later post about the relative poor spec of the 120i. Also depending on which borough you live in, they usually have a sliding scale for permits based on CO2 emissions - might be worth checking that out also.

I can't help you regarding the petrol 1 series but I purchased a new BMW 116d sport in December for a Christmas present for my son. He's not able to drive it yet so I've taken it to work a couple of time and it's a lovely place to be and the Diesel engine very economical it's also cheaper to insure for a new driver than the 1.5 petrol.

As a side note I collect my new BMW M2 tomorrow :-)

Sounds like you've made up your mind. I don't think you'll go wrong with either but the smaller unit has plenty of character and is certainly quick enough for everyday use in pretty much every situation - I have it in a Mini. If you're still not sure, drive both. I don't think you can go wrong and either will be a big step forward from what your used to.

I bought a 118i Sport in November and very pleased with it. Its got a few extra options to make it a more more pleasant, and its a great car. Handles well, and is good fun in Sport mode. Also quite happy cruising on the motorway at 75/85 at about 45mpg.

If purchase cost and running costs are similar then go for the bigger engine car. IMO of course.

Presumably it goes quicker than 85mph though, right?!?

Or are you making reference to the fact that it's still economical within that speed range. Even my old 2005 1.6fsi Golf gets up to 110mph...

Thanks

Yes it goes quicker!

Cruise control set at 80 on the motorway gets 45mpg and it will happily sit there all day.

Update!

So today I bought the BMW 118i from a BMW dealership. 6 months old with just a few thousand miles on the clock - pick it up on Saturday!

Whilst I would naturally expect a nicer refined drive than my 2005 Golf 1.6fsi, I just hope that it's faster!!

More bhp and torque on paper so I hope that works the same in reality!

Thanks to those of you who gave your input - learnt a lot in just a couple of days.

I drive an M135i as my daily but I also have occasional access to a new MINI Cooper with the same 1.5 triple in question here. It's a great little engine IMO - eager to rev, sounds nice and decent performance. You definitely won't go wrong, enjoy thumbup

I've been travelling a lot recently, hence haven't been able to "do" PH for a while.

It'll do 130mph. It'll be fine; both of them will.

Pick the one you like the best - a bit more speed with a bit more cost, or a bit less speed with a bit less cost.

Even the 130mph one is quicker than most traffic, and can be driven at totally illegal speeds easily if you choose to.

I have the 1.5 3 cylinder in a Mini Cooper and it's quick and perfect round town. Performs well on the motorway and you can cruise comfortably at motorway speeds or quicker if you wanted with no problem at all.

Not sure how it would perform in a slightly heavy body but it sounds like it would be perfect for you.
