I'm thinking about selling my E39 M5 to buy a Vectra VXR for a year while I save up for an F10 M5. Subject to a test drive of the F10 first to make sure I like it.

Am I certifiable??

If you wanted to sell your M5 for a Vectra, then yes, insane. But seeing as its to buy another M5 then of course that's cool!

Surely a 530d or another 'fast' diesel would suit better if you are saving?

My friend has an Insignia VXR, swapped a 987S for it
It is honestly the most hateful and disguisting piece of st I have ever been in
Everything about it is vile
Sounds like a washing machine, the interior is tacky and naff, it looks like the most mundane car on the road.
Honestly, I would just get something better as your stopgap like a 135i, Golf GTi or something

Isn't the Vectra going to come to is to depreciate whereas the M5 may even go up a bit. How much money can you really save?

I don't need a car for work anymore and having been using a Volvo s80 d5 since May I definitely need to be in a petrol. Vectra (or whatever) really would be a stop gap.

Hmmm, I don't like the golf or 135i, (or any 1 series TBH), but they aren't bad shouts. A 335i would be better but there's the wastegate issues. I know the vectra can suffer timing chain issues as well.

The vectra isn't doing too bad depreciation wise now. The m5 will need regular maintenance as a daily and I am starting to struggle with my hearing while driving it.

Yes.

Just buy a ~£1k Japanese car with an economical engine that costs nothing for tax, fuel or repairs. The less you spend, the quicker you save for the next big one.

If it's a stopgap whilst you save then you need something cheap to run/fix and minimal depreciation. A vxr is a no on those counts.

Buy a little suzuki swift....buttons to run and easy to sell on. Fun too.

Just wait and go straight to the F10 M5.

I have one and to say it's power is breathtaking is an understatement !

Thanks for the input guys.

Keeping the e39 would be difficult due to my hearing.

I don't like small cars, plus I do travel abroad and tend to drive so would need something half decent for that, including a regular 380 miles round trip to see my family.

Have you seen the other thread on m6 fuel consumption?

I'd love an M5 but the tank size combined with the apparent upkeep costs are scaring me away from one, and that's as an ex-Maserati, TVR, Porsche, Ducati etc owner.

consumption doesn't bother me. I walk to work for my new job starting two weeks today, so it'll be fine to use what it uses. My e39 isnt exactly economical.

Me neither, more the range on a tank and the bork factor plus consumable costs.

It makes sense to me go for it, or another alternative would be the Mondeo with the Ecoboost engine.

Or a nice E350

a 380 mile round trip is not an issue in almost all small cars built in the last 20 or so years.

He is talking about the f10 m5 not the e60 m5. - the f10 m5 tank is far larger

Oops, hadn't spotted that. I'd never looked at the newer cars, maybe I should if they've addressed the range (and reduced running costs?)

It is for my knees. I struggle as a passenger in Ms tad's twingo.

Yes better range and reliability - they are phenomenal and the mpg feels like it is better than my old e92 m3 - but I don't really track it exactly per se as don't do enough mileage to worry about it.

Get a luxo barge and then up to the m5 when you're ready.

I'm still struggling with the link between the E39 M5 and the OP's hearing?
