That budget should see you in a nice Octavia VRS, estate form if it were me as you need all the space you can get!
Much more room to get the buggy and things in and out of, id always be worried about scratching the bumpers etc on a hatchback.
These travel systems really are a pita but they have to have them.
The s max is a nice thing too in titanium x form.

You're probably best to go for one of those super small MPV's e.g B Class.

Shouldn't be too bad to chuck around with 8.3 to 60 and sports suspension.

Brand New Audi Q2 (£20k, might need haggling)

Mini Cooper S "Breadvan" 5 door

This one is a massive spec.. quite big too, but not clubman size. Very brisk with nice full heated sport leather seats (very rare), MediaXl (rare) etc etc..

Not sure if already has been mentioned but fitting a cameleon into a golf boot when it's set up for new born is a little squeeze. We have a golf gti mk7 FYI. If it's the car you want it's absolutely doable without lifting the parcel shelf and maybe a shopping bag/changing back down the sides of the boot.

I got the gti on lease to stop me driving the c63 so much. Wife has pinched the keys and I've not had it back since. It pulls very well for 220bhp. Cabin has no less room than my c63 estate. Handles well and is still compliant. It's good on fuel.

Also you can fit a family in a golf. We have 3 kids (oldest 3.5) and I can fit all seats along the back row.

How far will you be travelling btw?

I can recommend the Jane Matrix system. The car seat clips to the buggy frame, but the key thing is that the seat can go flat (as well as front and rear facing) so the baby can lie down - which is much better for them on longer journeys as they tend to slump in the seat when very small. We did Manchester - Edinburgh in one go when ours was under 6 months - fed her around 7pm, set off, she fell asleep and woke up again as we got to the hotel ready to be fed again.

I have a Focus ST estate.

Fast enough, huge boot, lots of toys. Job done

Thank you for all the sensible answers. Some good stuff here, but I'm still quite undecided!

I will try and borrow an average sized pram and visit VW and Audi to see how it fits.

If it's all a bit tight, what's the next size up going to include?
mini MPV hatch (B Class, 2 series AT, B-MAX)
Large hatch (Mini cooper S 5dr)
Mini estate (Skoda Fabia VRS estate)
small saloon (Volkswagen Jetta, Audi A3 saloon)
Crossover (Nissan Juke, Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3)
