Hi,
Just wondering how much a garage should roughly be charging me to change the oil in Mazda 3 1.6 Diesel?
Any advice appreciated
Thanks

Not enough to make it worth posting on a forum about it :-)

My local garage won't usually do oil changes as they are so busy, so if you asked them they'd quote a ridiculous amount to put you off. I'd recommend buying your own and then finding a local tyre/service place that will do it for a cheap labour only rate. I use a local tyre/exhaust/brake place to change fluids on my Jeep. They recently did the engine oil, both diffs, auto box and transfer case for £25 (fluids supplied by me).

Half an hour labour plus cost of oil and filter is fair.

What about the time spent while the garage carries out its duty-of-care obligatios to safety check the vehicle?

Mind you, first service on daughter's Golf the car was in the workshop 20 mins. £68 invoice to VWFS, including parts, labour & VAT.

If I did just want an oil change I'd probably use one of the fast-fit places (but not Kwik-Fit) with an offer on.

I thought that. National Tyres overfilled my Volvo D5 by a couple of litres which set of an engine warning message. Luckily I had both a pella pump and the Volvo software to reset the message, but it was particularly galling as I told them to fill it up to no more than 2/3rds on the dipstick and there is a sticker on the bonnet slam panel advising the same.

And disposal of the old oil.

A VW specialist did this to my dads car a few years ago, overfilled it by a few litres and didn't change the filter, lovely.... apparently the lad was 'new'.

I imagine if you have that kit available you are capable of changing the oil yourself but didn't have time / wanted to get a stamp / receipt for it?

Its the only reason I have the oil changed at a garage in my OH's car but recently the garage seems incapable of putting the sump plug in correctly (or doesnt use a new washer) it always weeps.

To the OP though - our local specialist charges a flat fee for changing oil of around £90.00 (decent oil), the crappy local garage charges about £30.00 plus oil and filter.

Those sorts of places have never, ever managed to get the tyre pressures anywhere near correct when fitting new tyres for me so I wouldn't fancy letting them near the engine personally.

if you're intrested in saving a few quid then why not buy some latex gloves and the tools needed and learn to diy it

its not much more than undoing one bolt to drain it , refit it , swap the filter and use a funnel to refill it , very simple job if you are able bodied and have a slight bit of common sense

tools wont cost a massive amount , im sure someone on here can tell you what size fixings it has

Getting to the filter on my car's a pain. But at least you know how well the job's been done. Some cheaper quick fit places are a false economy.

Ah, but you may have had the ripple flange replaced, which accounts for the extra 3p.

Well, depends how confident (and capable) you are. There's plenty of scope to mess it up. If there's an under engine cover to remove and refit that can be a pain. Cross threaded sump bolt, stuck filter, broken filter housing.

Sucking the oil out is easier and it's what a lot of dealers (and other garages) do. Indeed I'm reminded of a thread on one of the Merc forums where a fast-fit place stuck the tube down the wrong dipstick tube and vacuumed out the ATF. Then didn't tell the owner, whose car would only move intermittantly.

£40-60 sounds about right for a 'normal' car in a local independent. Main dealer will probably try to get £200 off of you.
