Having led a main dealer sheltered life I find myself looking at older cars at indies most over 100 miles away.
Specifically I want a Cayenne 2008 ish 4.8 which can throw any number of faults in a millisecond.

I dont expect an indie to be able to fully inspect a complex car but what to do if it flashes a suspension light after a week - I asked them this and they said the autoprotect warranty would sort it not taking on board its his issue that soon after purchase.

If this happened I would want to take it to an indie and get the dealer to pay say 75% - is that unreasonable ?

I would never spend extra on a warranty from a dealer, especially not on an older car, they are really not worth the paper they are written on. Once the car reaches ~10years /100k miles or so they can write off pretty much any fault as 'wear and tear'.

Do a lot of research into common faults with the vehicles, if you want piece of mind pay a mechanically minded friend to come down with you, go over the car with a fine tooth comb, if anything is fishy write it off as life experience and drive home.

Very much depends on the dealer.

I would question if a car was so good, why would it need an aftermarket warranty to cover it? Why isn't the dealer standing up and saying he will sort any problems?

There are Porsche indy's that offer this. Might cost you a bit more initially but saves a lot of headache down the line.

A local Porsche mech will look over it on site for £70
I believe they are virtually next door.
I'm not expecting a new fault free car I'm just bothered about a £2k+ bill in the first week and the hassle round that

Spend the £70 & get it inspected, one wear & tear item to be familiar with is the propshaft, the bushe fails & they say it'll need the prop replacing but some indys can rebuild your original.

I can imagine, I just hate hassle but really fancy one - I'm also looking at spending a bit more to get a 2010 new model - I am talking to the Indy Monday

I had one rebuilt for £360 by an Indy so it wasn't to bad, but if I remember rightly it was around 1k+ as a car the 2009 turbo I had was okay as much as it pains me to say the supercharged RR my brother had at the time felt that bit more special & was more reliable which surprised us both.

I had mine for 18 months in that time I had the prop issue coil packs fail headunit & dash failure, luckily all were covered on the warranty (apart from the prop) I'd say get one they're not a bad car I wouldn't say getting a newer model is the big issue full history & low miles would be my priority.

If a £2k bill would terrify you this really isn't the brand for you. 10 year old Porsche can give you a 2k bill any time

Car getting inspected tomorrow as luckily indie Porsche garage is local.
Seller dealer sent me pic of service history and mot last owner was 6 years.
Need to check gearbox valve body and plastic pipes I'm told but I'm sure the garage will advise
Quite thrilled to add a Porsche to my history ....

I thought the later cars had switched to metal pipes anyway? If not, one thing to be aware of :
Mine (2003) had already had the plastic pipes replaced with metal ones before I bought it, so it wasn't something I was worried about. However, a year or so into my ownership the starter motor began to play up - turns out that the coolant pipes are directly over the starter motor (which is buried in the V) and dumping the coolant contents over the starter doesn't help it's long life.

Air Suspension can be expensive if it breaks - I didn't check mine when I bought it and did need one corner replacing. I also had a height sensor fail, but the parts have been replaced which meant I needed to buy a control module and all 4 sensors.
However, I wouldn't buy one without air suspension - it allows the behaviour of the car to be transformed at the flick of a switch.

Even my old 53 plate is a great car - far more fun than it has any right to be even on a twisty road. But they can generate big bills if something breaks.

Cheers, I am ok with bills but obviously want to get a good car, a full OPC service history and no serious advisories combined with the last owner of 6 years makes me think its as good as £15k gets.

Slightly disappointed no DAB, roof or leather dash but it has air, bose and the phone module so I have bluetooth!

Now its train up (after report) and risk it or drive up and go back to collect - once I decide I want it I hate the thought of it being anywhere else (yep cynical) but the dealer seems very fair.

Sounds like you are going to be on pins throughout the ownership. I wouldn't bother.

Had an SL55, 760i and a Turbo R - none threw a big bill as chosen with care and in the case of the SL I spent the money on preventative work and it paid off (or I was lucky).
A cheap 5.0 4*4 didnt cut it for me (Infinity FX50) so I hope this is a better drive if so Ill run it a bit and get a newer version.

If it was me I'd go into this with the idea that post-3 months you'll be in your own. Most selling garages will buy a car, valet it and hope for the best.

At week 5 I found a main dealer becoming shy on their responsibility currently

Our warrantys wouldn't cover it, they cover nothing for the first 30 days we have to fit the bill. If the the customer was too far away we would ask customer to take it somewhere local with knowledge (so a specialist) we would want an inspection which we would pay then we would take it from there.

Warrantys also have get out clauses on wear and tear, and they also reduce the amount paid based on age and mileage.

Car is bought, I am very very happy with my Cayenne and the experience of buying a 10 year old Porsche unseen from an Indie - pics and update tonight.
