Assuming normal car no category start 12000 autotrader how much you would give for it on ebay auction or from advertisement autotrader ?
If it's popular prestige make model like 3 series BMW 5 series mercedes E class audi a6 a4 etc?
a) If buyer write light damage
b) If he write after accident professionally repaired
c) No accident other issue stolen recovered etc?

Here is what I would give
a) max 75%
b) max 70% who knows how deep was accident it can be pretty big...
c) max 80%

Why muck about with one at all?
It's a problem you will have to face when you come to sell unless planning to run into the ground.

Don't listen to people saying it'll be impossible to get rid of. Ive had a Cat C and 2 Cat D's and didnt struggle to get rid of any of them at around 80% of their unrecorded value.

Cat C needs to be cheap - the logbook marker is the kiss off death.

Cat D is not recorded with DVLA but I'd want to see the pre repair photos (light panel damage only) before buying anything. I've seen some absolutely horrendous repairs.

I'd pay 75% of normal retail value for a properly repaired Cat D.

If buying to sell on immediately then 75% of trade price minus the full cost of repairs to make good. You'll sell it for 80% of retail so gives you normal trade markup plus 5% extra for the hasssle/risk of it being catD.
If it's a nice car that you're buying for yourself to keep then as long as you get it cheaper than 80% of retail minus the cost of repairs then you won't lose.

yes I have bought recently cat D vauxhall corsa and just curious what happens when I sell it after say 2 years.
It had very light damage just front bumper damaged but I replaced it and have photos of damaged.
I guess that's ok if I can get about 80% of normal car price back.
That's a reason for topic smile

Corsa's depreciate like a stone, being Cat D will just make it worse, you will be lucky to get 40% in 2 years.

Also if it is anything to do with the car YOU bought from cartransplants then even less.

Sold a cat D 53 plate Leon Cupra R for about £300 less than the average price (I sold it for £2100)

To throw in a curveball on this, how much would you pay for an unrecorded "write off"?

The fleet company I work for will regularly sell off vehicles that have not been ABI recorded, but some of these are properly wrecked, and in some cases nothing more than a shell.

I've taken many a call from a guy on the street who has bought a car from a dealer, only to find out months later it has had major repairs on it. We sell it with full disclosure, however there is no guarantee that the repairer will inform subsequent owners.

thought on your last topic you were a genuine member of the public and hadn't bought from "trade" before?

Id want 40% less for a cat car.

The issue is that say you had a crash and it was written off (again) then the insurers would claim it's already been written off once and offer you absolute peanuts - nothing like 75% or whatever of retail. More like 30-40%

For me, categorised cars are bad news, but there will always be a buyer prepared to buy the car of their dreams for a lot less than retail and overlook the cat status.

To me a Cat D has to be 75% of the retail price & for a Cat C it would have to be 65% of retail for me to be interested, in both cases I'd want to see the accident damage.

Not so. I repaired a BMW Compact a few years ago that was a category C. It got ttted again in 2011 and was given full market value AND kept the car - repaired it for about £150 and a day's swearing.

I just finished repairing a 12k miles 2010 Gen 2 Boxster 3.4 PDK with full history. It was sold to a friend weeks before it was even completed, sadly only for what it stood me, as he's my best mate. It went for about 6k less than a none cat D car would have done at that mileage. About 25%. I reckon I would have taken a couple of grand out of it otherwise, not much, but better than the bank.
