Hey,

I found a few of these locally... petrol, manuals, 1.6 or 2.0...

RENAULT MEGANE 1.6 VVT CONVERTIBLE

Any horror stories?

Prices are suspiciously low, for 2007-2009 cars. In the £1500 ballpark.

Run for the hills?

The aim is to have a spring/summer fun car, that also takes the kids back from school if needed, but probably mostly for my commutes during long warm days.

Yep.

I'd be looking at 3 series verts for that purpose and price range.

As above, they are cheap for a reason. Be very aware of 10 year old French electrics esp on a convertible that has probably leaked for years.

When I picture a Megane convertible I don't think "spring/summer fun", I picture a guy who wasn't allowed to have anything remotely sporty or fun, who had to buy what the other half wanted demanded, and was only allowed the soft-top version as a token concession. When he drives around in it he has fleeting moments of unbridled happiness, perhaps a subconscious smile flickers across his face, but soon enough he remembers he needs to be back home by a certain time otherwise he's going to have to buy some more shirts.

I could be reading too much into it though.

Is the Coupé Cabriolet? the one with the folding metal roof?

My parents had one of the first 2.0 dci 150, it was one of the least pleasant cars I've ever driven.
I don't know if it was because of the heavy lump, but it gave the feeling of understeering in every situation.

I can't comment if the petrol versions with a lighter engine would behave differently, but for if you're looking for something fun to drive, I'd advise to look elsewhere.

This was my parents' version:

How about a Saab 9-3 convertible instead?

Saab 9-3 vet?
BMW 3-series Vert?

Either is a better steer than the Renault, and would be within price range (although a little older)

With the roof up the headroom is very poor. Oh, and it's a car for girls.

I'll be honest OP, I'm a total Renault geek and have been for many years. If you said a Renaultsport Megane I would whole heartedly say go for it but the CC version gets the thumbs down from me.

You kind of don't get the best of any worlds either. Space is minimised compared to the hatch so rear space is minimal, heavy and probably not that reliable in terms of electrics.

If you want some comfort and reliability I'd look at a Saab or something German (CLK maybe).

I had one of the older Megane convertibles, 2002 with a fabric roof. Was great fun, drove nice enough, looked ok, cheap to buy and run and very few issues.

Girlfriend had a 1.6 308 CC of similar vintage, slow didn't quite cover it, in fact glacial was generous. Relentlessly depressing or ancient Transit flattering would be my description. I can't imagine the Megane will be drastically different being of similar power, engine capacity and weight.

Plus like the Megane it was only a 5 speed. It had a short final drive to make it feel slightly less depressing so it screamed it's knackers off on the motorway and chewed through fuel at much above 65

This was my parents' version:
I remember Hammond doing a road test on this and the Pug 307 convertable on TG ages ago, the weight of both of them was rediculous, he said they both drove like slugs as a result, weight of the car in general not just the engine.

1. It's a Peugeot.
2. It will be unreliable.
3. There can be no pride in being seen in such a clunker.
4. They are plug-ugly.
4. The driving experience is horrid - think gut-less & tank-like.
5. Even with summer approaching it will soon be worth nothing.
6. I know this because a neighbour bought one & I had the misfortune to drive & ride in it. But then I
did have an Audi A3 Cabriolet on my drive.

........... surely you aspire to something better?

A £1500, 10 year old French convertible you say?

What could possibly go wrong?

So many reasons why you shouldn't buy this st heap. It has the sporting prowess of your averaged beached whale, probably weighs as much and when it explodes (which it will because it's a Peugeot) you'll only be left with your hair dryer to power you home.
Why this is on PistonHeads I don't know- get it in the sea.

I have had bad experiences with older French cars. OK cars, st electrics. Steer well clear.

Caveat: no experience on newer/recent French cars (2012+)
