Well tbh no I'd not want a lease/pcp. I'd heard a few stories and I like the option of if I don't like the car I'm not stuck with it for a few years, and having a £6000 car as an asset if something tragic happens I've always got that to sell and downgrade to a banger. Looking at ~2010 A3's at the moment, but I don't want a silly dsg or auto one
Understandable mate, with regards to the age of a3 you mentioned I'd steer clear. Don't seem to be the most reliable things from what I've read on here, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to disagree however rolleyes

Manual all the way, especially for a first car!

What's peoples opinion on this? As in are there any common issues I should look for with this gearbox and engine combo

In Aug 16 it failed an MOT for tyres - it then passed the same day, but with advisories for all tyres. I'm guessing part worns were put on it which would suggest the owner was on a pretty tight budget.

Other than that, the MOT history looks pretty clean.

The dealer seems to have good reviews.

It first went on sale on 22 Jan for £5565. Either it was overpriced, or it won't shift for a different reason.

I can't say as it's to my taste, but that's very subjective.

I'd certainly be asking for a new MOT and probably a service - I've no doubt the tyres will be right on the edge by now unless they've been changed since the last MOT.

It's basically a Golf GTI in a different body. All the same issues on one of those would be typical on the A3.

You can buy a Golf GTI for half that if you look around.

Maintenance/servicing isn't really an issue tbh as my dad will make me do oil, filter and plugs change on any car brought in the family. I'm more worried about the engine or gearbox as being VAG it's bound to cost a fortune if it goes wrong

Well anything GTI is crazy amounts on insurance, that's the reason why I'm looking into A3's with the 2.0t engine as it's basically a GTI underneath for a third of the insurance
