Prices do seem to be dropping. My WBAC valuation has dropped from £14000 to £12000 in the past 3 weeks. Ended up going with bestcarbuyer.co.uk at £13650.

I sold one of our cars via Motorway recently. I uploaded a load of pictures to be as straight and open as I could as the car, though in great condition, was 7 years old. It brought down the valuation from Motorway by £600 but the 'adjusted' (by Motorway) reserve was met by one buyer.

Their rep turned up and immediately said the real price was up to £1200 less than the agreed reserve. That was before even saying much at all !! He then came up to £700 below the agreed price saying that was what it was worth, citing paint chips I had already declared.

To cut a long story short, which involved him saying it needed new brake discs as they were rusty (Absolute rubbish in the extreme !!) he did find a few tiny bits I hadn't seen ... so we agreed £200 less than the price they had 'bought' the car for. I would not entertain him rubbishing stuff that the buyer had already been told about.

It was very like I expect WBAC to be and not pleasant. I will give Motorway feedback in due course.

I wouldn't mind, but being told defects on the car made a difference, ones which I had already photo'd and were clearly included in the sale info did p*** me off a treat.

I may go to WBAC next time as at least I know to expect that. WIth Motorway, and having photographed and declared all the marks I found, it was not what I expected.

I'm currently getting my 3 series ready for sale. Wbac etc are all offering £12500 or thereabouts but they obviously don't add anything for options. My car has the plus package which when buying seems to add at least £1500 so it's a bit galling that I'm only getting low ball offers. Think I'm going to put it up privately at around £14.5 -£15k and see what happens...the closest I can find to mine is around £16.5 or £17k

Going on those figures that's quite the mark-up for wbac

I sold my car to Motorway.

To be collected on Friday May 27th. by We Deliver Cars. Email to confirm. Didn't happen.
'We can't do anything before Monday May 30th'.
Monday May 30th. 'We can't do anything this week because of the Bank Holidays'.
'We will pick it up on Monday June 6th'. Email to confirm. Text from driver on Monday to say 'between 4 & 5p.m.' Spoke to driver about 4.45p.m. 'Dropping in East london, will then come back to you'. Nothing.
Tuesday June 7th, ring driver, call goes straight to voicemail. Ring We Deliver Cars, when I select option 1 - the Motorway 'platform', it rings twice, then the call drops out.
Still Tuesday. Ring Motorway. 'Ah, leave it with us, something will definately happen today'. I am still waiting.

Do these companies just buy your car off you regardless of whether they have a buyer for it?

Want to sell my Hyundai IX35 but need to choose which company to use.

Sold my 2018 640d vert through Cazoo in October last year. Opted for collection from home, guy turned up, checked car, took pictures on a rugged ipad thing that transmitted to his head office, all was as described and ok'd and money was in my account before he drove away with it in the back of their covered transporter. I even had an automated phone call on the house landline to say the money had been sent. I would definitely use them again. Admittedly the car was mint and I had described correctly as such so there wasn't anything to find.

Some are effectively on-line car dealers, buying stock to resell. Others are advertising platforms, where car dealers can view and bid for stock to resell. It's possible that dealers will have potential buyers lined up, so be prepared to offer a little more for the car for an almost guaranteed quick turnaround.

There's nothing stopping you placing your car on several platforms, and seeing who makes the best offer.

I sold 2 Kias this way last year. Both went to Kia dealers hundreds of miles away. From start to finish, less than a week.

WBAC buys the car for their own stock.

Motorway and Carwow take your photos and market the car out to their dealer network, I believe they have a 9am-3pm period where dealers can put in their maximum bid for the vehicle and you're then given the option to accept or reject the highest offer - So basically a silent auction.

Why don't you offer it to, say, Carwow, Motorway, WBAC, etc and see who offers the best price?

Don't worry whether they have a buyer for it.

I’d go with Cazoo, no hassle. They offered the best price (excl the one I mention further below) simplest to use, although I chose not to sell to them the system was good.

Motorway is OK, not as good as Cazoo.

If you are in Swansea, or around Birmingham/Coventry, look at selling to The Trade Centre, they smashed Cazoo, Carwow, Motorway etc’s offers and offered to private sale value. The catch is you have to go to them, and I live in London so that is far.

Other companies to consider;

Evans Halshaw, WBAC, Arnold Clark, Bristol Street, Car Store, Stratstone, Car Shop

Just the signup to Carwow put me off, I was bombarded with harassing phone calls not just from them but from other similar companies that I didn’t sign up to. The first phone call was fine (ish) as it was a verification call with info about valuations but they kept calling, and it got pretty wearisome so i stopped answering and after about 4/5 days of ringing twice a day they just stopped.
It’s stupid. Why would you need to take a phone call to “verify” your listing and why the fk would I need to call to get a guide price. The lazy mouth breather on the phone at Carwow wouldn’t let me finish my sentences. The whole idea is just that I sell to the dealers bid highest for your car! Just give it all straight up like everyone else!

Sorry for rant but I wouldn’t bother using their site agai’

Had a similar experience with Carwow - they wouldn't list my van as it "didn't meet one of our essential criteria" - without actually detailing what that criteria was - I assumed it was because it was a van. But then got follow up emails about how they could help and to give them a call to discuss the 'pricing'.

Used Motorway and have to say it was excellent - van sold for agreed price - got a call from the dealer later that day to arrange collection - guy turned up on the day as agreed - money was in my account within 10mins and finance settled at the same time. Can't think how it could have been any more straightforward.

How thoroughly do they check your car over. Do they check all lights, electric windows, sunroof, do a test drive etc? If they found an issue after the purchase is there any come back or Is it a done deal by the time they drive off?

They look all round it very carefully. No test drive.

The money is in your account before the car leaves your drive.

Sale through motorway in June

They did not check my Z4 much at all. Got me to lower the roof but didn’t look inside or check anything else worked and must have spent 2 mins max checking it over before paying me.

Car was picked up by delivery drivers hired by the dealer

The car was in good condition and everything did work but I was surprised at how little they checked (eg no check on locking wheel nut etc)

It was the end of the day and they were late coming to me so my experience may not be typical

Sold the wifes 2003 Hyundai IX35 to webuyanycar today, here's my experience..

Backstory - we bought the car this March for £5,200 only for the sunroof to later fail, seized up completely in the 'stuck open' position. Garage couldn't repair it and we were looking at potentially having to scrap the car. Ended up going to a scap yard, cut a roof of an IX35 and took it to the garage for them to butcher it for parts, they eventually got it to close but said it would never work again, and I got them to disconnect the switch. Wife lost faith in the car and bought a replacement privately.

Advertised the IX35 for sale for £5k and fully declared the non working sunroof. No interest so kept reducing it eventually to £3,500, but no takers. No way would I stitch someone up with not declaring it.

Got a quote from WBAC last night for a value 'up to' £2,600, booked an appointment to take the car to their local office this morning. Guy was really nice, asked wife to remain in the car with engine running, checked log book, service papers etc, did a visual exterior check, checked for no engine warning light on the dash, asked her to rev it whilst he checked the smoke, and tapped away on his tablet. Gave us a price of £2,200 after fees which we accepted and I gave him my bank details. Payment to arrive un Thursday unless I pay £30 for same day transfer. We didn't mention the sunroof and he didn't check it, or the windows or any lights. All very easy but we have suffered a ££ loss. I should have paid the £30 for same day transfer incase they notice the sunroof!!!

Only concern was he kept the full V5 saying it's because the car was going into trade. Now im not so sure if that was correct?

He was correct in saying he should have the full V5 as long as he did it electronically. I always take the full V5 and do the transfer in front of the customer.

Anyone have any recommends for car buying services for a car that is relatively low on the general desirability scale?

Think £30k Cayenne …

All retail equivalents are going for £32k plus whereas cazoo are offering £21k and wbac £25k!

There’s definitely a market for these but because it isn’t mass market I don’t want to be forced into underselling the car
I'd imagine that's in a difficult position of being too old to tempt dealers into a decent bid and too expensive for the vast majority of private punters, the ones willing to spend £30k+ on a used car will invariably want it to come with some sort of approved used warranty.

I agree with ChocolateFrog, try offering it to a Porsche specialist or Porsche themselves

I WBAC my Koleos a couple of weeks ago. With prices as they are, it's an easy way to walk away from an unloved car on finance along with a nice bit of money on top.

Absolutely no hassle (same as last time) and they only knocked £200 off as I'd put the mileage down incorrectly (by like 5K miles!)

I see its appeared on Cazoo now for £21K, so not a whole lot more than i sold it for (and with substantially better paintwork !)
