I had the same quandary earlier in the year (but ended up buying a Mustang) and would take the M440i.

Previous M340i / 440i GC owner so I know the drivetrain really well, and know what the running costs are like.

Test drove the i4 (40) and it just left me a little cold. Neighbour two doors up has one, as well as a colleague at work as a company car, and both complain about the range and tyre wear.

If you were asking me in another 4-5 years I'd probably lean towards the i4, not at the moment though. When the Mustang goes (probably this time next year) I'll be looking at a B58 engined car again.

Not a perfect comparison but currently have a G22 4 series and B58 (although in separate cars). I've also had a couple of i4s on 5 day demos. The i4 is a lovely car and really does drive nicely but when pushing on you do start to feel the weight of it. I also found the range pretty average - in the summer c.220 miles (I had the 40 and I gather the M50 although faster is even worse range) and my experience of the charging network still left a lot to desire. For me it really detracts a lot from the whole experience when range/charging were in the back of my mind - though appreciate this could be mostly solved if you have a home charger and I also tend to do a lot of motorway journeys and probably just need more practice with charging anyway.

I also don't particularly love iDrive 8 and vastly prefer the earlier 7 with actual physical buttons. The i4 demos both ended up with me wishing to be back in my cars to be honest. And the B58 drivetrain is truly exceptional, just effortlessly fast and still frugal when it needs to be (40mpg+ on a run is quite achievable). My vote would go to the 40i just for that drivetrain, wait a few years and jump on the EV train when they are even better!
