I'd suggest taking a good look at the 3.0 V6 S in Portfolio spec:

Or the CL500:

I've had two X351s and the ride is brilliant if you're a hooligan but very "sporty" for a barge. I love it, the car is an absolute hooligan to drive fast on good roads, but I think Jaguar were quite mad thinking it was appropriate. It's not the crashing ineptitude of an Audi but there isn't much difference between my XKR and XJ.

ABC/MBC equipped Mercedes don't ride with quite the same old man cushion softness of the airmatic cars but they're exceedingly good. Nothing has the magic carpet effect of an XJ40 Jaguar or something like that, but the lack of body control and wallowing can be too much in cars like that.

I had my fill of classic cars with my pain filled ownership of the town car hehe
ahhhhhh I've suddenly twigged!! Yes, I agree that maybe something modern might be a relief yes
I’m still in contact with the new owner of the TC, it’s been pretty reliable for him, clearly the car and I just didn’t get on.

I guess mixed feelings there - glad it's still being enjoyed; miffed that it caused you so much 'hassle'. Still a nice bookend to the story thumbup

I've always liked the quirkiness of those for sure. They are on the 7 series chassis I believe, so it will be a lovely thing to cruise around in I reckon.

Volvo XC70. It has suspension that actually goes squish when presented with a bump, unlike every other car made in the last twenty years. £25 will buy any XC70 you can find, even a unicorn Ulez compliant one.
Unreal levels of comfort, especially with the smaller alloys
100% agree, although it hasn't got a BMW badge on it for the OP.

Disagree. I drove one across Australia's appalling roads (Canberra to Queensland and back) a couple of years ago, and found it cramped, noisy, and tiring. I think they're hugely over-rated cars.

Yeah ok.

What’s your recommendation?

A Citroen.

Agree with Bannock. Owned a few Volvos, driven loads, none have had better than mediocre ride and some are outright poor. Crap for NVH in those old P3 cars too.

What makes it more galling is that they drive like stodge too, so you get bad ride AND poor dynamics.

Wow, OK. I'm only posting personal experience/opinion. Disagreement isn't an insult or a personal attack.

Citroens are pretty widely know for decent ride qualities. Particularly big saloons. It's a leftfield choice I grant you, but the OP asked for suggestions and I'd imagine he'd like some things suggested which he may not have considered.

It's a cruising machine, not a track car, although admittedly, i wouldn't know what the other models are like.

I did drive a newish S80 a year or two ago and felt that was harsh but it was riding on 20" rims ffs.

I had a 2011 V70 D5 with 17" rims, Michy Primacy4 tyres for a few years and it was very refined and comfortable and enjoyed cruising up and down the motorways in it, especially as it had adaptive cruise.

But in all honesty, without driving all of the cars mentioned, there really isn't any way to compare, and the OP needs to get out and take a few for a spin! And even then, specs and fitted options will influence the drive massively.

Horses for courses and all that.

A supercharged L322 Vogue SE is tempting but the reliability is concerning.

I don’t have run flats fitted, Goodyear eagle f1s are on it at the moment.

Left field choice - 5 series gt?
Terrible ride - at least on run flats on the bigger alloys (which many came with).

An Alpina? ... I've heard even the modern ones with large wheels ride very well.
