CItroen C5 with the Exclusive pack, Hydropneumatic suspension, double glazing.
You can pick them up for cheap, and the last generation cars were actually decently well designed and built (PSA poured in massive budgets for this model that replaced their range topping C6). It is the last in line of a decade old comfort philosophy of this company.
Use the rest of the budget to travel.

My sister had a Volvo S80, and I remember driving it after a 400 mile blast in my old Citroen Xantia. I called her up and I told her that there was something wrong with her car, to which she replied that it just got back from the Volvo dealer check-up and all was ok. Honestly, the ride in the large Volvo flagship was medieval in comparison to the old Xantia.

Another car that deeply impressed was a Jag X350 that I test drove, stellar chasis tuning. If the X351 is anywhere close to that it is seriously worth considering.

That should ride really nicely with it being the SE rather than the M Sport I reckon. I've always gone for M Sport BMWs, but I did have an E92 330d SE as a loan car for a week once, and the ride in that was amazing in comparison to the M Sport I thought.
I had a browse for 5 series the other day. it seems that people only go for m sport, couldn't even find an se

Most comfortable car I’ve ever driven is the Volvo xc60 superbly waftable.

I reckon the winner is to find something high spec with adjustable damping and then swap the wheels for a lower trimlevel to gain sidewall back

How are G11 (2017) 750i’s? I think they have the updated engine that is less problematic but hard to say for sure.

I've just traded in a BMW 730d xdrive which had air suspension (can't remember if it was standard or was an option). It was sublime 99% of the time but could make a bit of a bang over certain potholes. About 7-8 years ago I also had a Panamera 4S with air suspension. That was almost as good (comfort wise obvs, not performance - which was epic btw smile)

I don’t have run flats fitted, Goodyear eagle f1s are on it at the moment.

Left field choice - 5 series gt?
Should be a nice ride as long as you go.SE spec. Built on the 7 series chassis I believe

I got fed up with the Herefordshire roads so bought a G31 5 series in SE spec running 17" wheels and non run flat tyres. The ride is understandably excellent. Small wheel, big sidewall combination is unbeatable. They look rubbish but I'm comfy.

Weird how different people's experiences of the same car can be. I've done several 500 mile days in our XC70, loads of 200 mile days, and it gets driven down questionable lanes and rough shooting tracks all the time. 'Cramped' and 'bad ride' are quite possibly the last words out of the entire English language I'd use to describe it, but then 'interesting' would also be quite far down the list too!
