having seen the near-universal praise lumped on the A610 in this thread RE: Sublime Scarlet Red Alpine A610 for sale ( https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... ) it got me thinking what would you buy for that instead?

Rules:

must be made no later than 1999
must cost no more than £27,000
can't be a strict 2-seater
can be a garage-queen

I'd possibly be looking at one of these or the slightly newer sister in pic 2 (yes i know the T/A is cartoonish) and have a fair chunk of change left biggrin

It was an RX-7 for me - quick, balanced, beautiful, iconic

sold this time last year for a little over £20k after a decade.

Yep - 100%.
One car I wish I'd owned when they were cheaper - tropuble is I can technically afford one now reasonably easily but I just can't bring myself to do so

Are they as hard to find in unmolested condition as the PH classifieds suggest?

928 was my first thought.

Instead, I'll have a Peter Stevens Esprit.
They generally start at £30k, but this is within the 27k limit. https://www.carandclassic.com/l/C1618634

In a word, yes. There are a few and they command a premium if in good condition. Majority I see have been barried!

Not enough seats to meet the OP's criteria.

You might be able to haggle this one down into the prescribed budget

I suspect many of the good quality ones have made their way across the pond now they meet their 25 year import rule.

Cerbera. I don’t think anything else can provide the excitement and overall ‘theatre’ at that price point. A lot out there in budget and if you get one that has been looked after I’d hope it wouldn’t be a nightmare to look after.

Loved the cars from this era, particular the sports coupes. Nissan 300 ZX and Skyline, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi GTO, Subaru SVX, Mazda RX-7, Alfa SZ, all fantastic.

928S4, unsurprisingly.

If not, then Excel SE or Renault 21 Turbo..
