Audi fan boys and all things VW

I have sold the Volvo V70 T5 and am again looking for a fast fun estate of a certain vintage.

A pal of mine is Audi daft and they can do no wrong, even though his S4 has cost more in a year than my barge did in 5? I quite fancy a w211 E55 estate or perhaps an E39 M5. He is pushing the Audi equivalent which is I think an RS6. I do like the Audi but it just seems to be poorer quality and a bit of a try hard compared to the Benz or BM.

Has anyone owned comparable motors and is the Audi being cheaper to run and buy worth the poorer perceived quality?

I'm not bashing VAG as I know they are always looked at as inferior to the rivals, just what their like in real life. Any thoughts welcome.

I think anyone assuming any of the German brands are trouble-free is kidding themselves. They can and do go wrong and cost considerable amounts to maintain, especially with AMG/M/RS tax applied.

That said, they can also be surprisingly reliable, when relatively new or nearly new. As with anything, age will mean maintenance to keep things tight and in tip top shape.

Go in to any of them with your eyes open and with a good knowledge of the shortcomings of each car and you’ll likely be happy with whichever ends up floating your boat the most.

At that age the biggest factor by far is how they've been looked after.

The E39 M5 is the one fast approaching classic status but they didnt do an estate if that's what you really want, and i don't think the RS6 went far ahead of the pack until the C7 model.

I like fast Audi's - got an R8 and currently tempted to get an old RS6 alongside but some years ago I had an S3 - around 3 years old at the time - and it cost me more in parts than my Tuscan. Nothing "major" but lots of suspension bits didn't seem to be as robust as you would hope.

Other than the R8, which is clearly glorious, I can't think of one Audi I'd part with my own cash for. The brand does nothing for me and honestly the S/RS cars are all just peak roadman. Very rare sight at track days too, which again speaks to the ilk who buy them.

Take whatever the equivalent M car is.
