Hi guys , after two and a half months started noble today , engine fired up but would not hold idle and kept dying . Started it up again and kept the revs up so it wouldn't die , once warmed up tried to rev it but it was struggling say over 4000 rpm and was not revving freely and as soon as i took foot off the throttle it would die . I did manage once to get it to hold at idle but was rough . Anyone know what it could be ?

If you mean 2 1/2 months standing I would say plugs, is it running on Six?

Yes it has been standing and never turned the engine on in this time . I'm not sure if it is and don't have anything to check them . Could they be flooded ?

if it's starting i doubt it will be flooded. if it's not plugs, could be a fuel/air mixture issue or obstruction of some sort. Has the pipe before the pump partially collapsed?

When engines stand for a long period of time the plugs get dendritic growth, some time a wipe is enough, depending on how old they are it may be wise to change them

Hi Mitch Pipe before pump was changed last July at service , I wonder if it is the plugs as Adrian suggests.

Hi Tux , fuel gauge was showing just a bit over the last marker

ok mate is there a problem with low fuel ? failing that could it be the plugs ?

As Adrain & Tux say it could be fuel or plugs however what you describe could be that a timing chain has jumped due to lack of oil pressure in the chain tensioner on start up!
If it were me l would have it professionally checked rather than keep trying different things.

This sounds serious and i presume undriveable? . Would i be able to hear anything if the timing chain has jumped or have other symptoms? . The car was running ok before i put it away for the winter.

Doubt you would have noticed on start up, I may be very wrong but as said I would have it professionally checked just in case !

I would go with what Kevin has said I've heard of this before iff you go on ford owners sites its a common thing for the tensioner to loose pressure and if the ratchet on the tensioner fails chain can jump a tooth on start up .possibly pull out the spark plugs and turn the engine over with a spanner to check all clears

The car was running very well and before putting it away for the winter I drove it for about two hundred miles on shell V power mostly motorway . It had a full service last year at Jetstream and they fitted a new fuel pump and all new fuel hoses , new actuators etc, it then had a remap with yellowshed and was running like a dream. I have a feeling this is electrical related and I will have a good look tomorrow morning .

give it a good run and see if it is the same the following day

you can adjust the throttle stop so the idle picks up

ECU or ECU connectors ? Could just try disconnecting and reconnecting, best to do this with battery disconnected, reconnect, then try running.

worth mentioning that unlike standard mondeo the Noble V6 has quite a lot of valve clearance due to the way they lowered the CR, if the cam chain does slip you would be unlucky for it to destroy the valves and it will just run very badly.

What you describe does sound like it could be a slipped timing chain... the chain can be checked and replaced with the engine in the car, I did it once around 6 years ago smile
Of cause I would check all the electrical stuff first as it could just as easy be something simple like plugs etc.

Had breakdown mechanic to check car after andygtt thought it could be the alternator overcharging . He found battery at 11 volts with engine off . At idle it was reading 15.3 volts which he said was too high and should be a max of 14.2 volts , pointing to the alternator overcharging .Has anyone else had the same problem ?

Update : one new alternator and battery and back in business .

Big thanks to all that helped here on this great forum ! ( lost count of how many curries i owe Tuxman and Blue3R!) and massive thanks to andygtt for all his generous input, diagnosing the fault and suggesting not to drive the car and who saved me from probably frying the ECU etc !! bow
