Rear Alloy uprights splintering around bearing circlip reces

I put this on the facebook page the other day, but thought this might get a wider audience.


Both rear uprights were affected in the same way, found whilst having new bearings fitted. I think if you take off the wheel, brake calliper and brake disk and look behind the 4 stud hub you might just see enough to view if yours are also damaged. I might have been unlucky, but its worth a check.

Chip it away to get the damage off



it goes quite far once you get started



then have it deep alloy welded and machined back to correct finnish



finally with new bearing fitted.

What does the lip actually do. Could a spacer just not be use.

Proper job. Work obviously carried out a competent engineering machine shop with TIG welding
facilities. Not a DIY job.
And no Bondy a spacer will not do. The lip holds a circlip which keeps the bearing in place.

Yeah the circlip is to stop the bearing leaving the upright, neither bearing had moved so not sure why they both cracked same place.
