There certainly was plenty of whooshing and whistling (not to mention dumping... errr...) coming from the rear of the car. If it was the 3ltr I would be more than happy with that, if not and the 3ltr is missing this soundtrack I won't be all that happy. I want my 'Max Power' sound effects. Waaaaa

You've got me wondering exactly the same now! Was it the Portofino blue car that you drove?? If so, then it definately was 3 litre and very noisy too! I was a bit surprised when people say the GTO3 is quiter than the 2.5's cos this one wasn't but what AMG says makes sense, it must have been the last of the 2.5's with a 3 litre engine.

Portofino blue, yep, thats the car. Thinking about it, it did have dual exhausts at the back, so must have been the 3ltr, although if some of the intake components were in a different place, then it might not be indicitive of what a 'proper' 3ltr sounds like.

Andy - a current owner was running a 2.5 and now has a 3.0 in the same car !

Andy - can you shed some light on the noise debate ?

Also re the boost upgrade to 0.9 bar - This is only on the overboost, it doesn't hold that pressure on full boost, this is still 0.7 bar - i haven't noticed any deterioration in the already appalling fuel consumption since the upgrade

Hoping to get a drive of the 6 speed 3L car at the Autodrome day...............

I driven both the 2.5l and 3.0l on and off the track and there is a difference between them, although not that much. The induction filters for the 2.5l engines are right behind the cabin under the rear clam shell and therefore the noise as you accelerate is louder. On the 3.0l car the induction filters are behind the vent further back in the engine bay, you still get the rush but its not as in your face.

The lag on both engines is nominal, although the 3.0l needs slightly more revs before the turbos come out to play, but this makes it easier pottering through traffic.

The engine noise under load is different too, the 2.5l was a lot noisy than the 3.0l, however, the new rear facing exhaust pipe on the 3.0l does have a better (and deeper) exhaust note on tick over! IMHO.

MPG between the two is minor, driving "off boost" you can expect 25mpg max on both, take it on the track and you're looking at around 7-8mpg for both.
