Hi all,

Cant see anything about this on old threads so just wanted to know if many owners had experienced paint bubbling on bits of their car? Is this very common as with other fiberglass bodies? To my knowledge it only seems to affect certain cars?

I had a few bubbles on my car. I was told it was caused by excess water in the paint when it was originally painted. The factory resprayed the area's affected for free. Since then I have not had any more trouble.

I have got some, has taken 5 years for it to happen. Lucky it is on the clams so will be fixed when the clam gets resprayed this month.
Unfortunatly with fibreglass it can happen, even if all precautions were taken when it was sprayed.

A couple of the early 3R guys had some trouble with this. IIRC two or three of them turned out to just be bubbles in the top-coat. Very easy to sort.

I've got it on the part where the rear clam meets the bulkhead buy the Air filters. I thought this was quite a common area for this.

I haven't had any problems with my car or dealership before this.

I bought my car new from the dealership, 4 years ago. However, a year ago, paintwork bubbling, on one door of the car, started to show.

The dealership looked at the car, and suggested that I had got it resprayed - which is untrue. Eventually, they asked me to show the car to a nearby bodywork specialist, to get their opinion. The bodywork specialist suggested that the bubbling effect was not my fault, but rather it was occurring under the outer paintwork. The specialist was to report back to the dealership.

Neither have contacted me regarding this, and have ignored my emails etc.

I wonder if anyone could offer me some advice/guidance?

First thing is to get the facts - I'd get the body shop to put that in writing (for a 'drink' if necessary). Without this it'll just go on and on. Then get an estimate for reparations to your standards, then suggest to the supplier that his invoice, the aforementioned facts and the estmate for repairs would make a great case in the Small Claims court biggrin

I went to view 3 of these with a friend about 8 years ago. All of them had bubbling paint on the rear spoilers.

Whatever you do DO NOT touch the bubbles. Often they will shrink back when heated up. Obviously some are worse than others but suggest first get the panel warm before giving up and repainting.

This can be a symptom of using car covers especially in cold conditions.
If you keep your car outside it is best NOT to cover it in sub zero weather.

By 'bubbling' do you mean tiny micro blisters? If so, I have them in a few places but so far they are pretty inconspicuous.

My car didn't have any for the first 10 years of its life, when I changed the body I left the old rear clam outside for a few years (not under a cover).... its now covered in micro blisters.

It seems to me that the water is absorbed into the GF from the underside, then when it gets hot its the paint that heats up and moisture rises to the underside of the paint causing blisters.

Andy's probably right but whatever the mechanism for them to occur, I can tell you for sure that even after a month of dry warm weather those bubbles still contain water! When you press them they will pop and water will escape.
I've had fun popping them like zits on Andy's old clam, quite therapeutic really biggrin

Wouldn't a simple solution be to make the whole body out of carbon fibre? wink
