On the face of it, Dacia's look decent value, however, I would be very concerned about residual values at two or three years old.

This is a very important consideration when buying any new car with your own cash.
Dacia, across all models, consistently have been the best performers in the UK for residuals.

The Jogger will be a huge success.
Absolutely and deservedly so. There's no need to stay up all night tragically spread sheeting every penny with cars like this because you just know long term they'll be better value than anything else available.

All you have to do with cars such as these is back of a fag packet your own sweet spot for buying and selling, take it to the village garage once a year for a cheap service and MOT if you CBA to sort that yourself and simply get on with using it for whatever purpose you need it for.

When time comes to flog it simply stick it on Bookface or Gumtree and within hours there's going to be a queue of buyers outside your front door fighting each other for it.

I test drove a Sandero Stepway Prestige Auto recently and it was really nice, much better than I expected. My only criticism of the entire car was although the gearbox was fine once moving, it did seem a little slow and dim witted when pulling away. I didn't manage to get above 50 MPH but I do wonder if the 0-60 time of 14.2 seconds is going to become tiresome on the motorway?

But a really great car and a LOT cheaper than equivalent car from other manufacturers. If you plan on buying a car and running it until it dies then these are absolutely fantastic.

Annoying that Dacia have increased the prices twice this year already, these were an absolute bargain when they were available to pre order when they were first announced.

We may get the Spring here at some point, but I guess it's much smaller.

the Spring (in Comfort trim) has a 3.5" media display hehe

Residuals are only really important on expensive cars much more to lose.

Wow 11 secs 0-60! didn't realise that was still possible hehe
Scary thing is it would annihilate a Sandero 1.0 SCe 65 .

Claimed 0-60 of 16.7 seconds. Ouch !!

How often do you do traffic light grand prixs on the motorway?

There is a lot of stopping, fast starting, hard braking and repeat on many motorways, especially in the right hand lane.

I don't, but it is nice to be able to just pull out and overtake easily when somebody is sitting in the middle lane at 65MPH. I have driven underpowered cars in the past and it is not nice when you come to a long incline and start losing speed even in top and have to change down a gear.

Plus it is just more comfortable and relaxing to drive a car with a bit of power, otherwise why would any manufacturer sell a car with an engine bigger than 1 litre?

My wife had a Fabia 1.2 HTP that claimed 0-60 in about 15 seconds.

In reality, it was quite responsive and had torque where it mattered. It wasn't difficult to drive on a motorway or up a hill and I even overtook in it.

In daily driving it felt quicker than her previous, more powerful, faster redlined through the gears, 1.2 Micra.

You don't have to join in with all that dawdle and thrash and arsey tailgating foolery though. Regardless of whether your vehicle is capable of playing that game or not, in heavy traffic you're usually better off sitting in L1 maintaining a steady speed and a reasonable gap ahead and just watching it.

If that's what you do then a small capacity engine is sufficient.

As James May said on the Chernobyl episode "I can afford to lose this and buy another one and it would still be cheaper" than the Fiesta or Up.

I was amazed at how (relatively) expensive they still were at a few years old. I was hoping they'd be like a Chinese motorbike and be worth 50p.
My brother had a Sandero when they first came out. Thought it was very good for the money.

They're like Berlingos et al. Bought by the parsimonious with a view for the long term, so few turn up at less than 5 years old.

On the continent they make a really really basic model, mainly for farmers, with just a steering wheel and speedo inside, it's called the Dacia Lot.
Very good!

The French are very good at that and market share is high in France. Buy a basic unpretentious car and run it into the ground, not just the budget conscious, but professionals and the wealthy too. There's hardly any of the 2-3 year change cycle PCP model that we have here.

I could see that being turned into a camper if after removing the rear seats it has enough space.

Really like these and I'm sure they will be popular.

As has been said above these are probably popular with people who buy for the long term either as a straight cash purchase or through a traditional load rather than lease / PCP.

With all Dacia's I would avoid the very basic spec and go for the 'Comfort' trim level. The extra up front cost is worth it if the car is a daily driver and you will be living with it for the next few years.

I would be happy to drive a Jogger (although not sure about the name!) and it does look super practical and a lot of car for the money. Allow £500 for good rustproofing and the simple mechanicals should see it lasting a long time.

The French and many Spanish as well very sensibly don't play the silly game of regarding cars as status symbols like the English do and go anywhere in either country and streets even in wealthy areas are full of well worn and battle scarred cars that have been around a bit.

And, yes you're right. Try finding a Berlingo/Roomster/Yeti/whatever mini MPV at reasonable money that isn't completely knackered or hasn't been to the moon and back and see how long that takes you.

Ask me how I know. smile

I have been checking on AutoTrader occasionally for a long time to see what late low mileage private sale Dusters come on and there's hardly ever any. The missus is not mad about a new white one with steels so maybe that's the way to go at some point hehe
