It brings back memories. I remember seeing a Centaur in Edinburgh about 1979 before I left. Very low, which is what "Probe" was all about.

O/T Just ending a holiday in Le Marche, driving a hired Lancia Ypsilon. Largest A posts I have come across making driving round bends difficult.

Thanks for those links, the Probe cars were something I'd heard of, but only seen small photos in magazines over the years.

Are there really no doors? Looks like you have to climb in the roof - but not sure how it comes off from the outside.

You enter through the top after sliding the roof panel back. Not much of a problem when it is that low.

The latter 2001 had an electrically sliding roof, with seats on rollers that slid back and up vertically as you stood into the cars. The seats then rolled back down underneath you!

Also from the same stable:

I remember seeing one of these at a kitcar show, they really are tiny. Has anybody ever sat in one or drove one? it cant be the easiest thing to drive!

Dont get the Probe 16 confused with the Probe 15, the 15 was the really small one based on Hillman Imp running gear, that evolved into the kit car Concept centaur Mk1, which is the likely one you saw at a kit car show. I owned one of these for some years with a high tuned motor. Im really suprised Im still here, it was a night mare to drive as it was so low. At night you where below the dip beam cut off for most cars, so you where constantly dazzled, and the cars used to steam up pretty badly with such a large screen so seeing where you where going was an optional extra.

I remember falling in love with a Concept centaur Mk1 at the last London Classic car shows at Ally Pally. There was also the later Pulsar (Concept centaur Mk2) outside, that I didn't like. Funny that! There was also one at Bromley Pageant of Motor the next year, in need of a massive rebuild. They claimed it had been the road only a few years before.

A car like this are marmite! You love them or hate them. I love them.

Personal I would like to see a new version of these. Three seats, driver in the middle and an engine of around 1000cc. A top speed of 100mph and 0-60 under 7 seconds. Door that work better (so they don't crack the front screen when thrown open) but keeping those looks.

I did have the Mk2 version for a while, it had a new top glued on and a new Vauxhaul Vertora (?) windscreen. Not pretty but a lot easier to drive. Just look how big it is, just under 3ft tall.

My 23 replica is actually easier to get in with the doors shut. With the door open its like you are hopping over last nights goodipotimus idea at the time without waking her up.

What a cool looking car though this one is. So sporty!
