Hi,

Just wondering why you MOT'ed your car before IVA?

1. Gets you a legal run out in it to bed in brakes, check speedo functionality etc
2. Check brake bias on the rollers
3. 2nd pair of eyes on obvious errors (MOT retest is free, IVA retest isn't).
4. IVA doesn't actually check everything that the MOT tests
5. Emsissions test to allow engine tweaks if nec
6. .....and it's a good thing to do ;-)

Am I right in saying that the vehicle must be trailered to the test since a pre-IVA MOT is not considered to be mandatory testing?

Nope, you can drive to both the MOT and IVA test, just inform your insurance company and make sure the tests are both booked.

I also understood DVLA or VOSA had made a statement that you couldn't get the car MOT'd because it hadn't an identity and would need trailering, and also that the MOT wasn't necessary (though I understand the OP's reasoning for bedding in brakes etc.)

Ok had it MOTed as i made the chassis and it is good to get an experts view for safety. Took it on a trailer so didnt need insurance. Brake test was done with thingy in car as it has limited slip diff and sump is 2.5 " from the floor so would ground out. MOT was given on chassis number and when i register it after IVA DVLA will change MOT cert to given reg number. Also got head lamps set up plus if there was any problems i would rather have an MOT fail at £50 to IVA.

Now i'm probably talking crap but I'm sure while doing all my IVA research I read that if you MOT a car you then have to MOT it every subsequent year therefore loosing the three years grace you get for registering a new car, is this true??

Cobra will not get 3 year grace on mot as it will be age related reg due to donor parts used. If i had all new parts with the exemption of 1 item then it would get a new current number

Don't know if it's been changed recently, but even with an age related the date of manufacture becomes 2014, and it's 3years to MOT!

Hi,

Having just recently IVA'ed my car and the following occurred:

Emissions - allowed me to fiddle with the holley carb till reading was fine.

Brake balance - failed this as rears locked up, I did take it to an MOT station prior to check the balance and it passed!! IVA more strict.

Headlamp - allowed me to adjust during the IVA.

All depends where you want you take it, the IVA guy really wanted it to pass but couldn't allow the brake bias to be changed on site.
