The Sylva/Raw Striker (if you can fit), and Sylva/Fisher Fury are excellent kits that don't cost as much as I think they should, but you'll struggle to find them at less than £5000. If you could stretch to £7000 you'll have many more good cars to choose from and get a more modern engine.

This is in you price range...

There's a 1700 ford cross-flow engined one about to be advertised soon as well.

Strikers, Furys, Pheonix are all Jeremy Phillips designs and reknowned for their handling. You could look at MK Indy's, MNR Vortx, Mac#1. All usually come in at a lower price than a Caterham.,

Ex-championship Ginetta G20? Depends whether you want something road legal.

~150bhp 1.8 Zetec, Quaife transmission and LSD. Fully trackday effective and proof being a race car at heart, somewhat basic in the fit finish department though! Readily in budget.

Does the Exocet need IVA?

I'm in a very similar position to the OP ,but being a six footer struggle for fit in sevens, even tho they are my preference.

If you're interested in building the car yourself, I think a budget of £5K puts you squarely in MEV territory when you consider registration and IVA costs. Something like a Mevster or Exocet.

Stuart now recommends that the vehicles are IVA tested, even though it was a bit of a grey area as to whether the Power Plant Frame (PPF) was a chassis and thus the kit was a mere body swap. IVA is a reassuring (albeit expensive) independent check of your build before you trust your life to it. To the OP: if you're careful about selling the unnecessary parts from the MX-5, Stuart reckons you can screw one together for £3K, leaving you £2K for the official tests and paperwork, which is plenty.

IVA kills it stone dead for me. I caanot deal with that level of anal retentiveness Im afraid.

If push came to shove, Id rather buy a £1k MX5 and drop another k on goodies on that.

I've driven this car on track several times (it is my elder brother selling it). Huge fun and very quick in the right hands. My younger brother always seemed to be about 1 second a lap quicker than me :-(

It was this car that persuaded me to sell my Lotus Elise and build a Fisher Fury R1.

During my Exocet build i got an insurance quote for it as a heavily modified MX5. The difference between that quote and what i pay now (fully IVA'd Exocet) was far more than the cost of the IVA.
