Ok, So its been a bit quiet here lately , so how many of us dream, if so what would you build?

If I may start- how about a Lambo Miura, but with a Elise chassis and Toyota V6 engine

Got to be something that's just unobtainable by normal means (=budget).

So a McLaren F1, for me, please.

Not sure if there's a production BMW engine worth putting in one? If not, then perhaps the Mercedes V12 with suitable exhaust would do for me: http://carbuying.jalopnik.com/how-to-make-a-used-m...

No, I mean an accurate F1 replica, rather than an 'inspired-by' design. I saw the DDR site a while ago and have tried desperately to like the result enough to be interested, but I just can't quite manage!

With genuine F1s being £5m+, I'd have thought an accurate replica would find a market.

The market for truley accurate replicas is probably pretty small, I'd hazard to say that most people will not be interested in making sure all of the door handles match etc. Most of the cobra reps are not accurate reps, for example.

On something rear drive, probably an MX5, maybe an S2000.

How about a full V weave carbon bodied noble replica with a complete bespoke chassis and removable hard top.... fitted with a BMW V10 5L engine tuned to 550bhp and a sequential GT3 porsche gearbox.

Strangely I already have every major component as I started collecting the parts to make this a reality around 6mths ago wink

Even more amazingly this was actually my Wife's idea as a joint project... and to think she had absolutely no interest in cars before she met me 3 years ago smile

I know people who have moulds for the F1, more than one body version as well including the LM.... unfortunately Mclaren will aggressively close anyone down who would sell a kit so you will never buy one frown... front end of my never ending GTT project started life as a F1 GF copy which I then cut around to make my new shape.

I have a thing for mid-engine hot hatches at the moment (having just bought my Clio V6 and chewing over a Metro 6R4 project)...

I don't think I'd want a 'replica' per se, so how about something modern, small and fun converted into an MR hatch.

I'm thinking VW Up meets Clio V6...

Not sure it would be a commercial success, mind!

I think an accurate replica would soon be covered by the pile of bricks sent by a certain Surrey based company.

I know that Mercedes Germany claimed to have crushed a gullwing 300 replica, but I'm not sure that story was entirely true.

Andy I think I know the one you are talking about, we have chatted about it before. There is another car being built (not a Mac F1 copy) that also has a copy of a body from a well known manufacturer and i wonder how that originated. I am aware of where the body came from but it is not advertised as being available from this source so speculate that a similar problem may be the reason.

I suppose if someone is truly serious about some of these unobtainable body's then it is a matter of reaching out and arranging a meeting face to face and doing a deal in private with no paper trail to ensure that everyone's interests are respected.....

The original GT40 copys done by Kenneth Vincent Attwell (KVA) had some stubble modifications to differentiate the body from the original GT40. Side by side the KVA and ford GT40 are noticeably different but for most people they just cant tell. One of the most notable changes is the ridge at the top of the side window that trails back into the air intake.

I thought i read via the web that the Merc gull wing was crushed as it was moulded of an original car and thus infringed copyright.

selling a full kit might be risky, however an art sculpture of something that resembles the body shape may be allowable, different product and different market segment, still risky.

I like the sound of the Esprit, but mine would be Alfa 33 Stradale but I'm not sure what engine would be an alternative for the 2.0 V8 (I think). Maybe Alfa V6.

I guess, to some extent... That was more of a mini sportscar though.

I like the 'surprise' of a shopping trolley being turned into something silly!

Clive's creations (or Andy's) are awesome, no doubt about that!

I guess if I was buying replica, it would almost certainly be an F40.

The thing about trademarked shapes is that it simply stops the trading (selling) in products that have that shape. Mercedes claimed to have trademarked the gullwing shape. But if I made for myself a spot-on replica of the Gullwing for my own enjoyment, then Mercedes couldn't do anything (legal) about it.

There are a dozens of models of McLaren F1, GT40, Gullwing, etc. And my gut feel is that none of the model makers went through the process of getting permission to use the design from the car companies.
