The funny thing is, I am now half way through my GT40 build which was my dream car for soooo many years and I can honestly say it is still the only car that does it for me, I love so many other cars out there but just not enough to build one.... I have no idea what I will do when it's finished. Can you build a plane in your garage!???..

Yes you can build a plane in your garage!

When my mate moved into his new house, somebody had left behind a part built Spitfire replica in one of the outbuildings.

Guess they'd lost interest.

Mark Evans built one in one of his "is Born" series.

Something a little like a LCC Rocket, but ideally a true single seater, and front engined. So I suppose a cross between a Rocket and a 250F.

Enough luggage space for a rucksack and waterproofs. Compliant suspension for real world stty roads. Around 300bhp/ton.

Fibreglass monocoque a la my GTM Libra (although in this case a tub).

The Light Aircraft Association formerly known as The Popular Flying Association.

Unless things have changed recently the approval process makes IVA look like a stroll in the park, but then again a failure at 2000+ feet can be more catastrophic.

Not exactly ultimate, however for a road rather than track biased car something along the lines of a Nomad with bodywork and doors. Use the BRZ engine, with option to supercharge, to keep the CoG low.

Kitcars could go along way in technical and the looks area, but the build costs go sky rocketing, let along production costs.

Before you know it you're up to levels of cash where it's actually just too insane not to just buy a special car. IMO

There was a fatal accident not more that 6 months ago in suburban Melbourne when an owner built Vans RV6a came down in a suburban street.

Haven't looked to see if there has been any reports on it from the astb yet.

Was a bit messy, may have been a health/opperator issue from the elderly pilot/builder rather than a plane issue if I remember the news reports correctly.

Once I get the gt40 finished, I would like to build a Vans RV6.
Or possibly just lease a plane and learn to fly.

Well, you certainly can: your garage is so big the echo takes 3 days to arrive.

wink

True, modern construction technology is still pretty much impossible for a kit car such as carbon composite moulded tubs (Alfa 4C, Zenos), or even a decent honeycomb sandwich panel tub that's good enough to outweigh the ease of design and confidence-factor for a small company that a steel spaceframe has, but looks are the main thing for me. Designing an ugly body or copying an existing body (i.e. replica) are seemingly both the same level of effort and investment as a good looking car design, but aesthetics seems to be a huge stumbling block for kit car manufacturers.

Alfa TZ2 based on MX5 mechanicals - Not a rebody though. A purpose built chassis to accomodate all running gear and suspesion retaining the mx5 geometry (the wheelbase would need to be shortened by a couple of inches)
I have thought about this at some length over the years and the only problem I can think of is sourcing a windsreen.

Hi all,

I havent really contributed to these boards before but have been on here reading for a while now.

Im still building my ultimate car, its a copy of the F40. I have been at it on and off for almost 11 years now but lately i have been putting more hours into it trying to make a big push to get the plug finished so i can start the mold making progress.

I have designed it to be a replacement for the Lotue Esprit body, i have been using an S3 chassis to make my body and floor pan fit but the final plan is to use an S4 v8 twin turbo car as a donor.

I am almost done making the floor pan inside the body, and i only have the rear bulkhead to do then i can think about cutting the rear end off to do the last few returns then its time to finish her for molding.

Cheers

Ignoring my typo that put the costs out by a factor of ten, just been mailed by a kind pher who remember my request many months ago that he let me know if he's ever near Goodwood - this Sunday I get to meet my idol! One of the very, very few cars I've never seen in the flesh.

Hoonigan, are you going? Be good to put a face (and garage!) to a username...
