So, a random eBay bid that I had no real hope of winning, turns out I have won!!

The car is a black 2015 Raw Striker. The chap is happy for me to get it taken to Raws factory so they can give it a look over. The car was apparently purchased by a film company, with the aim to sending it over to Nigeria, which then bankrupt and the chap selling it bought it from the administration firm via an auction.

Raw built the car last year, and its covered no mileage since build. The car isn't registered, and thus needs an IVA. According to the seller, Raw have quoted about 1k to get it up to IVA spec (needs lights etc), and get it through the IVA.

Does anything on here ring any alarm bells for anyone? It almost seems too good to be true. Of course the unregistered bit is concerning, but the seller has the original invoice so it can't be that much of an issue? And I only paid 5k for it!

Apparently Raw know the car, and thus ill be speaking to them once the New Year bank holiday is out the way.

To say im excited is an understatement!!

A new-unused Striker on the road for c. £6.5k is a screaming bargain - well done!

The car is a well-regarded Jeremy Phillips chassis design and as such can be set-up to be very sweet-handling. Please let us know how this turns out!

6.5k purchase
+1k for upgrading to IVA spec
+1k for IVA (incl. mods and evtl. re-test)
+ 0.5k for bits&pieces

=9k

not a real bargain, imo.

I am guessing it is this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RAW-Sylva-Stiker-Kit-Car...

Spec says 2.0l zetec black top on twin carbs. If raw are quoting £1000 of work to be IVA ready then I would snap their hand off and get a contract signed as it will need at least that in a new ecu, throttle bodies/plenum and a cat in the exhaust.

Welcome and get it on the road and have fun.

If thats the case , that its that car, IVA wont be a big issue . Lights need changing, car will pass emissions if set up well on carbs. Few edges need sorting and go for it.
IVA test is £450 , so get it reg'd on a Q plate and that negates a lot of emmission testing as becomes smoke only. I would take the front spoiler off for the test. makes more angles to protect .
Go for it, it will be fine . Yes, I have IVA'd a car a couple of months ago smile

Interesting that you can get a year 2000 engine through an IVA test with carbs, I was under the impression that you could only do it with injection and a cat, pre 1995 engines are ok on carbs, be interested to hear your experiences of how to do this?

You dont need to claim you know what the age of the engine is for a Q plate.

Guys,

Whoever found the eBay add, good detective work. That is indeed the car. I need to speak to RAW tomorrow, and see what they suggest with regards to getting the car IVA'able. The car is currently up the road from Raw's factory, and they do a "Get it ready for the IVA, and put it through the IVA for you" service, so i'll get them to do that.

The engine with carbs is the biggest hurdle yet to overcome, so I need to discuss with them the different options when they are open after the bank holiday. Speaking to the seller the seem to think the engine isn't a problem, and its easy/simple enough to get it through the IVA.

Intresting what Justin says about the engine though. So if you claim you do not the age of the engine, then it will just be Q plated? I'm sure I read elsewhere, that if age is unknown at the time of the IVA, then they will test it to modern standards?

I believe that is the main reason for a Q plate, is that the age of components are not known, which then allows more freedom for the test. Will be interesting to find out the answer, as I applied for a new reg for my build and not relevant, but I had a high emmission engine and the majority of emmission tests are N/A on the IVA cert and also the V5 and thats with the knowledge of the age of engine.
A friend is also building a westfield and uses an Emerald ecu and Dave Walker has put a 3 stage switch on ecu, which means on stage 1 , its running so lean, it can pass emmissions without a cat. As my mate says , it wont pull the skin off custard, but means he can get through on this and then stage 2 is normal map and 3 is track map. Thats on a black top Zetec, so it you wanted to bin the carbs and run leaner and better, then speak to Dave at Emerald.

Q plate is nothing to do with IVA, IVA test the road worthiness of the car, once passed the dvla will assign a registration depending on the components used (Q, age related or new). IVA test required proof of age of the engine (letter from ford) . Given black tops are Very common in kit cars and the vosa testers are not stupid, were not made until 1997 and have the date of manufacture stamped on the block it will need to pass a cat/injection level IVA emissions test. If it is subsequently given a Q plate, at mot it should be a blue smoke test. This is my understanding of the regs as they currently stand.

I wondered if someone would buy that! I wrote a brief piece about it in the February issue of Complete Kit Car, out later this week.

Hmm carbs seem to be OK with smaller capacity engines then? I had a stonking set up on the MoJo ruined by some clowns at the then local garage to pass their MOT test for a genuine C '85 reg 1.6 cvh.....

The emissions requirements should now be stored on the system when the car is registered, and these are the ones used by the MOT tester. Only if the requirements are missing does the MOT test default back to visible smoke for a Q plate, so it really depends on whether the car gets correctly registered.

There's definitely something not right about it, it certainly doesn't look new, some new parts maybe but I reckon the rest is out of their parts bin. Can see that the bodywork used to be yellow and the shocks don't look new. Don't know about most of you, but maybe some look at that and think wow it's been built for a film, surely no expense spared....!

I look at it as a candidate for a parts bin special, shiny bits on the outside. If he has indeed backed out he's dodged a bullet.

It's very definitely an old Sylva Striker. It has a live rear axle rather than IRS, it's the old Sylva pedal box design that used the Mk2 Escort pedal and M/C, the upper wishones are the old Sylva design and the uprights are cut down Mk2 Escort McPherson struts rather than Sierra. The shocks also look like the Spax units on my old Sylva Striker.
