How to get around Q plate?

Hi
is it possible to get around being issued a Q plate?
I am building a MG midget (with quite a few mods)- it will be 90%+ new parts and was lucky to have a personal number plate bought for my birthday.
As i understand it is possible to go through SVA and get it registered as a new car - but i would get a Q plate and would not be able to transfer the 55 plate.
I thought is used to be possbele to go through SVA and pay the additional taxes and get a conventional plate - is this still the case?
The other option I have heard of is to go the Northern Ireland (my folks live there) register the car as new there - getting a NI plate, THEN do a personal tranfer.
Does anyone know if either of above is possible, or of any other alternatives??

If you can prove enough bits are new, then can register as new vehicle. See DVLA website..

IIRC the only way to get a current plate is to build the car with all new parts, or all new parts + fully recon engine OR gearbox. This includes the chassis. You will need some large receipts.
To the letter of the rules all the parts must be purchased from one supplier (Westfield sell complete kits for example).

I don't think they all have to be purchased from one Vendor, as that was certainly not the case with Ultima's (think it makes it eaiser though)...... and I think the engine and gearbox can be considered one unit although there seems to be inconsistency regarding this.
However don't think you can just wire brush things up and claim they are new, you need a genuine receipt for every component Including one to say the ONE recon component is reconditioned.

Is the chassis new? If not,you can't be legible for a new plate.You will have to prove through a bill of purchase or a chassis number.If it's a heritage shell,that might be slightly different.I am not sure on the use of emmissions on a car like yours either,with regards to a new plate and catalysts etc.You're best bet is to use the original plates,if its an old chassis or have a mind bending time convincing the SVA about a 'new' car and it's going to be very tricky getting a car like an MG through an SVA.Think about all those sharp edges round the dials,toggle switches etc.
The midget will be a new heritage shell with new suspension brakes etc etc; vast majority supplied by Frontline midget: the engine + box is a recon Honda S2000 unit (yep this baby's gon'a fly) so i will have all the reciepts.
it really will be a new car - hence the orginal thought of a new plate - then with been given the RO55 --- plate for my b'day, it started me thinking.

For the rules on registering read here about the points system - note the 'OR' in the wording about used or modified chassis and Q plates

If you go the age related registration route based on the original vehicle; then there is no way that you can put a 55 plate on it. Due to the restriction preventing a car bearing a registration that is 'younger' than the car's original registration.
You do not have to get all the parts from one supplier to prove it's new, you DO have to have invoices to prove the newness of all the major parts. My GTM Libra was registered as new car in Feb this year. It has used seats, steering column, front calipers, radiator, heater, plus many other smaller bits. See the list in the link above for the main requirements.

What a great idea for a car 
I've always fancied sticking a modern lump into an old MG 
As all the bits you're using are new, apart from the reconed engine, you should be able to register it as a new car I would have said. Best bet is to contact your local DVLA office and book an appointment with the kit-car person. They'll be able to help you get the new reg you want
'Where all the parts of a vehicle are supplied new by the manufacturer. Subject to the provision of satisfactory receipts and a Certificate of Newness these vehicles will be registered under a current registration mark.'
This is from the DVLA link above. The guy that came to inspect my Libra told me that all the parts had to be purchased from the kit manufacturer. He asked me if they were - I did the only thing I could and lied. The engine and box were brand new but purchased elsewhere. He then asked if I had receipts but didn't bother to check them. The 03' plate was mine.
There seems to be a lot of autonomy in the DVLA/SVA regional offices. In some areas things will fail where they pass without comment at another station. Some issue new plates easily, some not.
