Over the weekend I made the drivers door hinge... Its actually a bigger milestone than a lot of people realise as getting everything to clear through the door movement along with leaving enough room to actually get in the car is easier said than done.

Fortunatelly all the earlier planning and design has paid off and it actually works with tight gaps... bloody relief I can tell ya.

Awesome - Glad to see you making some progress Andy!

How much longer do you reckon now?
to be hounest progress has been somewhat hampered by me try to finish off the house and constant trips to the pub lol

want to get the door shut lines etc done so I can get moulds made of the door and side panels hence getting the hinges sorted

not really a lot of progress, did cut the front bumper line and started making the shut lines for that over the weekend and was looking like good progress was on the horizon only for me to have an issue with another car that needs to take priority frown

He's been too busy playing with this.

Steve
yes, I saw the thread.

This was intended as a kick up the 'arris... wink
all R&D for when I restart the GTT... to busy enjoying doing the noble atm though.
I've moved the game on a load though so the GTT should be awsome... eventually lol

Great work, massive fan of your threads, keep up yhe good work Andy.
thanks smile

not related to the GTT, but I tried making some light pods for the noble in an alloy coated cloth, very similar looking to carbon but alloy coloured rather than black smile

Planning to bring the noble , or finished gtt, to any more shows Andy?
Where are you based?
always go to stoneleigh, must admit the other kit shows seemed to be way too small to offer the range of little bits that I like to buy and I tend to use these shows to meet up with mates and they simply dont go to the other ones.

I do lemans every year without fail and a few meets at group track days a year

ok so its time to draw a line under the noble and restart my work on the GTT... must admit I have walked around the GTT a few times and am struggling to see where I should restart, I have a bit of a timescale as I am loosing the storage were I keep the Nemesis chassis (oh what a disaster that car was frown ) and I have always been planning to put the buck on that chassis once I had taken moulds from it so I can have it as a rolling item easier to store and move and possibly amend in future should I wish.

In the meantime let me update a few pics of the noble in its almost completely finished stage... I have a colour change planned and a few other things as lets be hounest it would be wrong to ever say these things are fully finished lol

Bear in mind I made moulds for all the carbon parts, the rear I made my own buck for and took moulds from that... I also did my own engine package thats unique and makes it the most powerful one in europe at 700bhp... I also made my own fuel tank, tripple plate clutch package (everyone said it was impossible), dash, designed electric windows, rear chassis etc etc so it was a huge amount of work and why I say it was R&D for the GTT smile

1050kgs full of fuel, with 700bhp and 590ftlb.... Also not many full carbon cars out there at the moment so it looks pretty trick as well.

Have raised the bar for both our projects a lot higher than we planned lol.

moved the game on a little more for the GTT and cloves project as I made the nobles Tub from carbon over the winter, just getting it back on the road smile
Its now full lacquered carbon, only the rear clam to remake for perfect V weave as well smile

hopefully the noble is now finished, ok well maybe a few minor tweaks wink

I think it's how intricate the centre section is that REALLY shows Andy's skill! There are peope selling carbon body panels that would never take something like this on! I hate to think how detailed the molled and plug were to make something. Like this.

Also, Andy, how do you decide what matterial to use in the carbon? For example, what makes you use a Kevlar core over just using carbonfiber? I don't know anything about compersits so sorry if this is a daft question. smile
I failed to find anyone who would consider doing the rear clam which is why I took the project on myself... and I've got a little carried away smile

The tub is actually more complex as a construction than you think, I have 2 types of foam core and 3 different types of carbon weave as well as kevlar all depending upon the location... for example I wanted the roof so strong I could stand on it (it is) without being heavy... same with the sill sections that you slide over.... so I used a special foam core material there... the door shuts were reinforced with kelvar so that in a crash they will stay intact. the outser side panels use a differnt foam core that can go round more complex curves.

BTW the tub weighs 16kgs!

I won't lie, they are complex parts and they are not simple to make... Lots of time.

Not having breaches and getting the resin everywhere is quite hard and takes planning, I put in loads of extra resin entry points at places I'm worried about or far from what I consider the natural flow and to date I have only had one 2 dry point issues and I solved them by adding resin entry point during infusion. Not ideal but doable.

Lots of pictures on my photobucket account, here is one of the tub being infused... I envelope bagged it, the bag was 5m long by 4m wide :-)

I never pull resin until I have full vacuum... the pic above is me pulling the initial vacuum prior to pulling resin smile
