I have managed to design a canopy that has no windscreen or roof yet offers full weather protection. I'm a bit reluctant to post images on here at the moment and would really prefer a one to one meeting. I've spent three years thinking about this and want to ensure that the first public outing is timed well. I may be passing your area late next week if you would like to see some images and discuss partnerships. I will meet with Italo at Stoneliegh to introduce myself and my ideas to him.

With regards to sales, I believe that potential in this market is already huge and untapped. There simply isn't a drop dead sexy commuter vehicle out there. Fuel taxes are at an all time high and more cities are planning to intoduce congestion charges.
Look forward to seeing you, I will be in most of the week 9-7 Stuart 01623 655522

I simply cannot get my head to reconcile $36,000 for something that runs on a few lead acid batteries - hardly cutting edge technology, hardly the greatest design work in the world, just WTF are you paying for?!

Stig, what are your plans on this ATM?

Hi Davi, I,m very keen to produce a prototype EV. Looking for opinions from like minded people. Frankly dont see it as a product due mainly to Lithium costs and I,m not interested in the heavy Pb options. I,m planning to start soon but finalising my ideas and grateful for any feed back. At this stage I reckon on a single seater, three wheel (one at rear) light, low, minimalist but will need weather protection. Regards Stuart

another very rough sketch, showing a different design incorporating side protection rails....

Nice one Italo, I feel that style is along the lines of the modern twist and go scoots but could possibly appeal to a wide audience. Regards Stuart

Good stuff biggrin

I've emailed a chap I know who works in the development of lithium packs - Haven't spoken to him for about a year or so but hopefully he won't have moved or changed email! If you have any firm plans for voltage and capacity let me know. Personally I don't think you need to go mad with range, I don't think something like this is likely to do more than ~50 miles a day, and if it can achieve anything like 50mph that would be more than enough for starters.

The one I came up with was considerably less powerful with pedals so that it would fit under bicycle status - mainly so it could use cycle paths because there is no way you would want to venture onto the tarmac around here on anything less than a chieftain! I think strength will be a major consideration in the design to overcome fear of accident damage, fortunately on something so small there is no reason it can't be built like an F1 tub and still stay reasonably priced.

Italo, that is a very sweet design, would be good to get some renderings of something like that. You could also continue the red front panels back to the impact rail and the canopy down to provide total weather protection, and have the whole front hinge up for entry/exit.

Thanks Stuart.....I was wondering what would I drive, but most importantly, would I buy something like this ?, I'm almost sold on the design......but it still needs refining in the various details to be ready !

these are just exploration rough sketches....

Thanks Del.....that was going to be my next step, and agree with you on the front hinge entry -exit system, it needs t be simple and economical to manufacture and assemble.

I think a one piece tub in fiberglass, or reinforced plastics could work, I wonder if Pet could be used ?

It's a long time since I had anything to do with PET moulding but I'd have thought the cost of the moulds required would be prohibitive for a low volume vehicle?

Hi Davi, appreciate any help. Cells are the biggest draw back in terms of cost of course bu they are coming down. Agree that huge range is not essential provided the average commute not being over 20 miles. I wonder if I could make one fold and fit in the back of a people mover? Park n ride?
Motor for this project is 48v and we are looking for around 90 amp hour. We are assuming consumption of around 150 watt hours per mile. So I am looking to achieve a range of over 30.
For those interested in the calcs;
48 volts x 90 amp hours= a 4.3 kilowatt pack
Consumed at 150 per mile=29.
48 volt motor at 4hp =3000 watts
3000 watts divided by 48 volts=62 amps

Not too big at all really then - Just to pre-empt a question I know he'll ask me, do you know / have a rough estimate of what the peak current draw will be like compared to the average?
