How much do people spend on a GT40 rep kit?

Noticed in Top Gear that Ford will have a brand new GT40 out next year. According to them (the mag) it is very very good and will cost less than £100k

Sounds like a lot, but comparing it with the Ferrari's, Porsche's and Noble's (etc) of this world, then it's quite cheap.

How does it compare to a kit? And which would you rather have?

£5 under 100000, so not too dissimilar to the 360, 996TT and Gallardo (and twice the price of a Noble).

GT40 replica ? 30k+

The (beautiful) turnkey minus CAV GT40 is £54k, the fully built is £68k - which seems a lot for a 302, an Audi sourced Getrag and paint...

Well it would have to be the Kit, as the Ford GT40 will be supplied in Limited numbers and are already sold. There is something like 25 potential buyers to every one GT40 availble. Plus the Kit could be made bepoke to you the buyer, eg trim, stereo system, suspension set up and so on...

Personally I don't think I've yet read an unbiased review of the new Ford GT (neither the new or old GT was ever officially called the GT40). So many people have given it raving reviews and said how it's so much better than the Ferrari 360 it seems as if Ford have suddenly invented the best road car ever.

Taking Jeremy Clarkson's review of it in Top Gear as an example - I know from previous things I've seen him do that he was an unswerving fan of the old GT. He was gutted beyond belief when he got the chance to drive one (Noel Edmond's I think) and couldn't shut the door with him sat in it. So with that in mind anything he says is bound to be biased. His review was on the back of a drive in a pre-production car around Detroit - not exactly pushing the limits of the car. It's bound to be fast in a straight line, it's American and powered by a 5.4 litre supercharged V8! It'd be bloody difficult to make it slow.

I'm trying to remember what I've read about the development as that at least is pretty impressive. The engineers had something like 18 months to go from concept to production as Ford wanted it ready for the centenery celebrations.

I'm probably being cynical, but I see it as a bit of a PR stunt using the history of the GT to build up an image of the car as a deity. As so few are actually being built it's unlikely many will be actually driven that hard anyway.

Just another cynical retro cash cow following on from the Ford Thunderbird.

So I guess I'd have to say Kit.

Looking at the responses, I think a satirical article on GT40 reps in KC in response to Clarkson's article could be a lot of fun.

What do you think Den?

I’m not sure I know what satire is?

I’ll ask Iain Ayre – I think he’s up on that sort of thing.

Den,

If you find yourself with something you're not sure you're going to want to use and don't want to waste a "proper" journo's time / fees I'm sure there's one or two on here would like a go. Hint, hint.

Personally if I had the money, then a real GT40 from the 60's, failing that then a kit that was as close a replica as possible. And finally a new one.

Chances of having the money? Well, I've bought a lottery ticket.

I would have to go for a kit as I wouldn't fit in the original being 6'4" tall I am the same height as clarkeson and I read an article that said essentially anyone over 6' need not apply
